The New York Times featured a first-person account of writer Ralph Blumenthal’s path to obtaining a concealed handgun license. His daylong course was presented at Hot Wells Shooting Range in Cypress, Texas. "I wanted to learn how to handle a gun and see what it took to be licensed to carry one," Blumenthal wrote. "In the end, and to my surprise, I learned about more than shooting," he added. "I learned about not shooting," referring to his orientation, which he declared as "clearly defensive."
well at least they finally got someone from the news that has not skewed what was taught and maybe get peoples mind of what it means to cc going in the right direction. give the man alot of credit for actually writing something that is not anti!
Imagine... if the liberals decide that Anti 2a is what is costing them elections and decide to actually stand behind the 2nd with as much energy as they spend on the 1st...
Nawww, never happen. Just doesn't fit the 'elitest' point of view.
In my experiences as a liberal/centrist I've found that antis tend to be anti only because they know nothing about firearms, shooting, how guns work nor have any concept in their own mind of defending themself in anyway beyond long ago thoughts of schoolyard bullies and running to get a teacher to 'break it up'.
A similar fear of guns akin to that of a child like fear toward snakes, spiders, flys and thunder.
If more folks like us would volunteer to take an anti on a _safe_ range trip introducing them to firearms there just might be fewer antis.
IRL I keep being told and hearing tale first person of introductory shooting trips with brothers, fathers, uncles, cousins, boyfriends and neighbors being given high powered hand cannons and magnum level shotguns, with no hearing protection and little in the way of instruction beyond "Hey hold this tight, now pull the trigger" resulting in even more fear and distaste toward firearms and those who use them.
I love to see articles like this one as rare as they are.
Good show Bumper I'm going to forward this to a few friends who are antis or on the fence including my mother inlaw who is gun fearful due to a jerk BF she had many moons ago that thought it would be funny to sneak up behind her and fire off his hunting rifle into the air while out with her in the woods supposedly showing her what hunting is like. Of course no ear or eye protection was used or provided.
She jumped and says she nearly wet her pants while her BF cackled with laughter. That was 20 some years ago and to this day she still has issue with guns only because of that jerky incident. My father inlaw has similar tales in regard to his older brother shooting neighborhood cats.
Quote: What if we were armed and got stopped for speeding? One thing not to blurt out to a cop (or anyone else, for that matter) is: “I’ve got a gun.” Rather, he said, hand over the gun permit with the driver’s license and say, “Officer, how can I safely give you my gun?”
<break> <break>
Excuse me?? Give the PO your firearm? CCW lic/permit=yes; firearm=I wouldn't offer it.
Texans--help me out here...bad reporting? Or do you actually offer your firearm to the PO?
In Texas if a peace officer or magistrate asks for your ID (traffic stop or anywhere else) we have to give DL/ID and CHL both
no requirement nor recommendation for giving firearm or asking how to give them the weapon
thats just bad reporting and ignorance
They did one (or the Washington Post did, I don't remember...maybe the same guy for all I know) about some dude from New York City learning how to handle a rifle and go hunting the first time.
I think he shot a deer on his second hunt.
Even if he's not hooked, like us, he would absolutely not demonize guns and gun people anymore.
I believe in most places the peace officer is allowed to "secure" your weapon during the stop if s/he desires. Of course, they have to give it back when all is done. Personally I don't see why they would do so on a normal stop since it would just involve handling the gun more. Leave it where it is and let me do my paperwork, so I would think.
The Boston one was not as good and they do make their digs throughout, but overall it's better than the norm and much better than nothing at all.
Two such articles in leftist rags...wow end times must be nigh.
Jim Pruett the instructor mentioned in the story is very
