Opened my door to a stranger today

A week and a half ago, I lost my billfold. In it was my one credit card, my one debit card, my driver's license, my CHL, my insurance card, my prescription card, 2 gift VISA cards, and $350. Since that day, I have been unarmed outside my home.

It fell out as I came out of the drug store and got in my car. A preteen kid was sitting, alone, in the car next to me. It was an hour later when I realized it was gone. I went back to the CVS, but of course couldn't find it. Since then, I have had the credit and debit cards replaced, and a temp driver's license. That was it.

Today, someone rang my doorbell. Beyond it was a dark-haired teenage girl, and a woman, behind. I opened the door.

The girl handed me my CHL.

She and her mom found it face down in the parking lot of their apt complex.

I am cautious, but I'm glad I'm not a paranoid anti-social, or I would still be unarmed.

Assess the situation and make a judgement call. Sounds as though you made a good one! Glad you recovered it.

Nice to know people still do the right thing

Good point, enk5. Actually, when I mentioned the kid, the girl held out her hand and said "was he about that high?" I said yes, and she turned to her Mom amd said "I'll bet it was xxxx". The mom shrugged her shoulders. I don't have any proof, and I don't trust a quick glance at twilight. I'm using this just as an opportunity to learn.

I have often thought about just this same kind of thing happening to me and I have thought it would be nice to have a wallet with some type of device to keep it attached to me. I just can't see myself carrying one of those wallets with a chain on them.

Is there any other type of retention device for wallets other than the typical chain that looks so very white trash?

Stiff penalty for not possessing your CC license in Texas? If I lost mine, I would carry anyway (while seeking a replacement of course) because here in Colorado, carrying without a CC license is only a misdemeanor, and if someone gets nailed but actually has a license, he can show it to the judge and charges are dismissed.

One option is one of those travel gadgets, a nylon belt worn under the clothing intended to keep passports, etc., away from pickpockets. If you kept your credentials in one, losing the wallet would not be so painful.

Nice story, but I was hoping for a better ending. At least you got back your CHL.
