If you want it close when you really need it, having it locked in a locker won't do much good to cover all of the areas of the gym. I would get a lightweight BUG and a smaller non-rambo fanny pack and put my gun in there. In a separate compartment I'd put my locker key, and gym ID in case anyone asked.

I believe Uncle Ted still likes Michigan a bunch. He still maintains some hunting property here, which brings up a good point. Michigan is a sporting State. Per capita, there are a lot of fire arms here. It would be very unpopular (read bad for business) to go anti gun around here.
