When I read "orange county" I was surprised the article was not biased.. But then I realized it was Orange County Florida... so it makes sense now.

There are plenty of roadside distractions (panhandlers) to split your attention these days. More than once I've had to jack my awareness level up a notch because someone behind me decided to get out of their car to walk their donation to the, ahem, requestor.

Sounds like the driver did everything right (other than shot placement) in this case. Unfortunately Mr. Wilford Gregory Jr. will probably be back on the street within 30 days to try applying his trade again.

I don't think it was 'luck', the CCW holder took the steps to protect himself and actually carried the gun. I know some CCP holders who never carry. I'd feel pretty foolish if I needed it and didn't have it. This guy planned ahead and when he needed it, there is was. Good for him. We all hope we never need it, but also know we just might some day. And BTW, I'm not bad mouthing the OP, it just irritates me to know people with a CCP that never carry.

Score one for the good guys.

He shot his attacker, he stopped shooting when the scum bag stopped attacking him, he called 911 and he stayed at the scene. Sounds like he did everything right and as a result, he will not be charged with any crime because he didn't commit a crime. Good for the permit holder!

The driver has to work on his center of mass delivery......but still a good ending.

I don't think two things that are completely within your control really count as "luck," but good to see this guy was able to end the attack.

Also sounds like this guy may have had his window open. I like to keep my window open at night after a long rainstorm, but most of the time in certain areas I definitely prefer to keep them closed... or open less than half way so I can close them quickly if need be.

One shot, knocked the BG on his butt. I'd say is was good enough shot placement given the conditions.

Sounds like the guy was getting pounded by the bg while retrieving and firing his weapon - i'll take any one shot knock down in that situation.
