The Boiling Springs homeowner who shot and killed a man whom he said tried to rob him at gunpoint in his driveway late Sunday night said he had a bad feeling when he noticed a car following him into his neighborhood.

The 48-year-old man, who asked he not be identified, told sheriff's deputies that once he turned into his driveway on Cottage Mill Run about 10:45 p.m., he saw the car drive slowly past his home, turn around and drive past his home again before stopping.

The man then heard someone running up his driveway. He got a pistol from his glove box and started to get out of his vehicle just as he was met by two suspects, who he told deputies were also armed and demanding money.

"It was all probably a second," the man said Monday. "It was just so fast."

Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office Lt. Tony Ivey said the homeowner was acting in self-defense when he fatally shot John Christopher Fowler, 28, of 572 Nature Walk Way, according to a written statement from the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office.

The second suspect ran away and has not been located.

When deputies arrived, they found Fowler lying in the driveway of the home.

Fowler died at the scene. According to the sheriff's office, the homeowner is not expected to face criminal charges because he was acting in self-defense.

"South Carolina law has long established the right for citizens to protect themselves from assault," Ivey said. "The legislature has extended this right to individuals in or at their homes, in their vehicles or at their place of work. The amount of force that can be used to protect themselves is any amount of force up to and including deadly force if the citizen believes that their life or the life of someone else is in danger."

There were two justifiable homicides in Spartanburg County in 2010. None before Sunday's incident had been reported this year, Ivey said.

According to Spartanburg County Detention Center records, Fowler was jailed in 2007 on two armed robbery charges.

The sheriff's office is asking for anyone with information about the second suspect to call CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIMESC.

The homeowner said he's lived in Spartanburg County all of his life and at the home in Boiling Springs for the past 10 years. He said he never imagined something like Sunday night's incident would ever happen at his own home.

"My prayers go out to the family of the other man," the homeowner said. "That was still someone's child."

Glad it ended in his favor. Truly terrifying stuff. Glad the DA is not going after him either.

very nicely done, good SA but sounds like he doesn't carry all the time since he had to get the gun out of the glove compartment, had he not noticed the car then he very likely would have been unarmed and the outcome woulda been different IMHO

Well it looks like their "easy target" wasn't quite as easy as they thought. Good job by the homeowner.
