Looks like I am moving to Ohio
Ok guys,
Can someone give me a rundown on the general Canton area and the local CCW laws I might run into.
I have looked at the website for the Ohio DA and handgunlaw, I am looking for the local area gotcha's that sometimes do not make the websites.
For Example in Oregon some of the cities have banned open carry and the Indian Casino's totally restrict all carry but this info is not on the State website at all. Of if any paticular weapons are banned.
Thanks for any help!
See ya in Ohio!

Well Ohio FINALLY has allowed CCW permits. I THINK Canton is OK. Columbus, and Cincy have restrictions on mags. Check Cheaper Than Dirt or Sportsmans Guide in the Magazine section. They list the cities they can't/wont ship to.

This is out of date. Ohio has statewide preemption so localities cannot legally have different gun laws, they are state controlled. The only mag restrictions I am aware of in OH are no more than 30 rounds and you cannot have a loaded long gun mag in the car even if you are a CHL holder. I have had issues with Natchez not shipping mags to me because "you live in the same county as Cincinnati." I got the mags from CTD and put Natchez on my banned list for their attitude and unresponsiveness even after they received a copy of the law showing that their position was out of date.
Canton is in the liberal end of the state. I live at the other end of the state so cannot give a lot of info on Canton. I am sure you are aware of the recent Canton cop interaction with a CHL holder - it did not go well for either. Ohio is a "must notify" state for the time being. The Canton deal has certain legislators trying to change this, but that is at least months down the road.
Ohio will have restaurant carry at the end of this month, but right now, if the location can serve alcohol for on-site consumption, it is off limits.
We also don't have any of those goofy authorized/banned weapons lists here. Generally, if it is legal at the federal level, Ohio is OK with it.

After the State websites - ALWAYS check HERE http://www.handgunlaw.us/states/ohio.pdf
State Preemption
Sec. 9.68. (A) The individual right to keep and bear arms, being a fundamental individual right that predates the United States Constitution and Ohio Constitution, and being a constitutionally protected right in every part of Ohio, the general assembly finds the need to provide uniform laws throughout the state regulating the ownership, possession, purchase, other acquisition, transport, storage, carrying, sale, or other transfer of firearms, their components, and their ammunition. Except as specifically provided by the United States Constitution, Ohio Constitution, state law, or federal law, a person, without further license, permission, restriction, delay, or process, may own, possess, purchase, sell, transfer, transport, store, or keep any firearm, part of a firearm, its components, and its ammunition.
(B) In addition to any other relief provided, the court shall award costs and reasonable attorney fees to any person, group, or entity that prevails in a challenge to an ordinance, rule, or regulation as being in conflict with this section.

No crazy laws that I can think of... OC is legal, but I never see it. I am up by Cleveland, so you should be about an hour south.

Canton has been in the news recently, and it's not been good.
Not to rain on your parade, but unless your move is cast in stone, I'd be looking elsewhere in Ohio.
Just Google "Officer Harless" (be sure you're sitting down).

"No Weapons" signs carry weight of law and there is no specific guide line for signage or posting. A crayon scribbled note behind the customer service counter is legal. If you are notified and do not leave or disarm you are guilty of criminal trespass. I think that this is a misdemeanor charge.
Schools/universities are off limits. You can be armed when dropping off or picking up your kids as long as you do not exit the vehicle. Gun stowed in the car is ok on college/uni campuses. State owned buildings are off limits unless they are primarily parking or restroom facilities.

The good news is coming September 30th we will be able to carry into restaurants that serve liquor so long as we aren't drinking. Also, Canton is closer to the local gun clubs than a lot of the major cities in the area.
That bad news is we have a requirement to notify police that we are carrying when stopped and some of those police are like Officer Harless.
Ditto what Gforty said about joining Buckeye Firearms and OFCC. They are both good organizations and have done a lot to make this state more firearm friendly.

Unfortunately my move is set in stone......at least if I intend to keep an income. I have lived in other states that seem worse including Kalifornia so most of what I am hearing is workable. I will miss Oregon but need to support the family and now is not the time to be out of work. Not much out there..
Anyway...Thank you all for the response this is what I love about this forum. All you need to do is ask and someone will have information.

There are some really nice areas around Canton. Check out the Uniontown and Hartville areas.

Are you actually going to have to live in Canton? My wife grew up there and it used to be a pretty nice town but these days not so much. If you just have to work there and can commute than any place south and west from Canton is pretty nice. North and east can be hit or miss.

I live in the Charleston WV area and have visited northeast Ohio numerous times. It is one of my favorite areas and IMO would be a great place to live. Of course it's an individual decision about living in town or out. Either way I think you're gonna like it.

Thank you all for the info.....This is a but off topic however I am required by my hiring contract to live "within a 30 minute drive from the City of Canton". I am not sure of the traffic situation there. Can you guys give me the "limits" of my rental/home search?
I have a start date of 9-26 at this point and I am still looking for housing.
