Each and every time that you read another story about a man shooting people inside an IHOP, or a man opening fire at a political rally, or a university professor shooting her colleagues during a meeting, or any of the other stories that seem to develop on a daily basis where an individual decides that gunning down innocent people is the thing to do; you have one more reason why I carry.

I carry my gun for the same reasons everyone else does, to protect Me and mine. It is a lifestyle, and because of that I think we are all better off.

Here is the old "Why I carry a gun" poem. Author unknown...but it pretty much sums it all up.

    Why I Carry a Gun

I don't carry a gun to kill people.
I carry a gun to keep from being killed.

I don't carry a gun to scare people.
I carry a gun because sometimes this world can be a scary place.

    I don't carry a gun because I'm paranoid.
I carry a gun because there are real threats in the world.

    I don't carry a gun because I'm evil.
I carry a gun because I have lived long enough to see the evil in the world.

I don't carry a gun because I hate the government.
I carry a gun because I understand the limitations of government.

    I don't carry a gun because I'm angry.
I carry a gun so that I don't have to spend the rest of my life hating myself for failing to be prepared.

I don't carry a gun because I want to shoot someone.
I carry a gun because I want to die at a ripe old age in my bed, and not on a sidewalk somewhere tomorrow afternoon.

I don't carry a gun to make me feel like a man.
I carry a gun because men know how to take care of themselves and the ones they love.

    I don't carry a gun because I feel inadequate.
I carry a gun because unarmed and facing three armed thugs, I am inadequate.

    I don't carry a gun because I love it.
I carry a gun because I love life and the people who make it meaningful to me.

Personally, I carry a gun because I'm too young to die and too old to take a beating.....author unknown (but obviously brilliant)

Here is my answers to your questions in your blog:

But all of this skirts the initial question. Why do you carry a handgun? I carry because it is my God given right along with the 2nd Ammendment.

    · Have you personally ever been threatened with violence?· NO

Are you the victim of a violent attack? NO
    ·

Do you carry simply because it makes you feel macho?· NO

Do you doubt the ability of police to protect you from crime?· YES, they will only be there to clean up the mess after it is all done. Look at the active shooter situations the cops are never there until the action is over and the shooter dead.

If you carry openly, do you use a simple belt holster or wear your pistol in a tactical thigh rig?· Only times I OC is to hunt use a simple belt and holster.

Do you make it a point to show people you carry a firearm, or do you feel it is none of their business if you are armed?· One reason I basically only CC is so no one knows I am armed. If you see my gun I want it to be a surprise.

Do you believe there should be no restrictions, few restrictions (i.e. jails, mental facilities, courtrooms, public buildings, public schools and/or hospitals) or widespread restrictions (including sports stadiums, taverns and cocktail lounges, restaurants, public parks) on where you can legally carry?
My vote is very few restrictions, jails, mental facilities, and maybe courtrooms.

Well, for me it is because of the belief that nowhere is "safe" in reality. Our law enforcement officers do their best for the most part, but there are simply not enough of them to be everywhere at all times. It takes only a matter of seconds/minutes to get robbed, killed, or otherwise victimized, and it is unrealistic to think that the police can always save you -- most of the time they are called AFTER the incident.

I never show my gun to anyone, nor let them know I am carrying. Restrictions on carry do nothing other than create an "easy pickin's" zone for criminals. If criminals were willing to obey a simple "no guns" sign or law, they wouldn't be criminals. This seems like blatant common sense, but it eludes many politicians and "sheeple" apparently. In cases where concealed carry is prohibited, I am fine with it if said place has armed police or guards watching over everyone (ie. a courtroom).

I choose to carry because I choose not to be a victim should the statistics ever not be in my favor. I don't think anyone at IHOP last week thought they were in an "unsafe" place, and neither did anyone at Virginia Tech or Ft Hood. I believe it is the right of every human being to defend themselves, but there are many that choose to live with the odds or the false sense of security that nothing bad could ever happen in "their world". Nobody ever wakes up planning to be a victim, but every day people are victimized in cases where they could have either completely averted the event, or at least turned the tides in their favor had they been carrying a gun.

Lastly, I choose to carry because so many people either don't bother, or don't believe in it. I know if one of my unarmed friends or loved ones is suddenly in a dangerous situation, that I hope one of the good people on this board or someone of similar mindset is there and ready to intervene if need be. By the same token, I understand that my fellow CCW holders have the same hope and expectation of me... and that is a responsibility I take very seriously. I am not a superhero or a member of special forces, but if I am in a situation where intervention is clearly warranted, and I have the means to save my life, or the lives of innocent people, I will do what I can. Every evening when I remove my carry gun from the holster, and place it back in my safe, unused for the day... that is a good day, and I hope the rest of my days go just like that.

I agree with all that has been said so far.
I will also spell out something that has been hinted at with regards to our right to bear arms:
As a minority I may be particularly attuned to the threat that disarming the populace may present to the continuance of a democracy of equality.

I carry for the reasons of self & family defense etc. like others. Even though we live in a somewhat safe country there are those who care little for your safety, let alone your life.

It is becoming a daily occurence all over that the predators will strike, anywhere, anyplace and anytime. Carrying a firearm just evens up the odds of me staying alive for just one more day.

I carry to protect those who may decide to harm me for no reason whatsoever... the possibility of being one of the random victims and my children who deserve the right to grow up... we have the human and american right to preserve our own existence and those we love and those who cannot defend themselves.

however if I am singled out specifically for my Christian faith, the belief that Jesus is the way, the truth and the life then my weapon will remain concealed and I will give my life for that conviction...

Why do you carry a handgun? The 2nd amendment is a right, not a privilege. I carry to protect myself and my family.

Have you personally ever been threatened with violence? Yep

Are you the victim of a violent attack? Yes, Robbed at gunpoint.

Do you carry simply because it makes you feel macho? Not at all

Do you doubt the ability of police to protect you from crime? Unfortunately, yes I do. I don't have a 24-7 police escort, therefore I doubt they will be there to protect me if/when something goes down.

If you carry openly, do you use a simple belt holster or wear your pistol in a tactical thigh rig? N/A; I don't open carry.

Do you make it a point to show people you carry a firearm, or do you feel it is none of their business if you are armed? No one will ever see it, until it's time for them to see it. I sincerely hope no one will EVER see it. Ever.

Few restrictions.
