Spotted someone carrying in a pistol free zone...

It was in a sports arena that was also capable of seating more than 2500 people, both of which are PFZs in MI. Printing fairly badly through just a t-shirt - with a gun company's name on it no less. I guess this person could have been a police officer but that wasn't the impression I got at the time.

Curious if anyone else has encountered this and what your thoughts were. Also, any updates on the legislation to remove MI PFZs?

I've seen people carrying in GFZ before. Since I have no way of knowing if they are authorized or not I mind my own business, while keeping an eye on them. I'm responsible fro my actions, not someone else's.

The last I heard on that legislation is that it is dead in committee. Honestly, though, I haven't been holding my breathe on this one, so there may have been some movement on it of which I am not aware. Check out MGO Forum. Those folks are usually on top pending legislation.

As for your original issue, MYOB. But... keep your eyes open. You never know....

Im surprised at this. I would imagine if someone was going to knowingly carry in a GFZ they would make damn sure they don't print. *shrugs* As others have said, mind your own business but be aware.

The same guy is probably on another forum saying that he carries wherever he wants, and has never been made.

I would have minded my own beeswax just like you did. Too bad some states don't.

When in doubt, get the hell out. Otherwise, just do as you did and be aware of what is going on.

I'm always amazed when people think (not those in here, but gen public) .... could it be an off-duty Policeman.

But my reason may not be what you think ... it's because there is the FBI, DEA, OSI, SS, US Marshalls and so many others that carry all of the time that the general public don't think about being there, and would be surpised to find out how many people are carrying guns everyday around them. It could have been any of them.

Personally, unless they pull it out and begin shooting people.... I could care less.

I saw a guy with a belt buckle gun one day in a restricted area to carry, and thought it was dumb... since he could lose his right to carry. But, that's been changed and if someone does now, it's a $50 misdeamnor fine.

I spotted a guy yesterday step out of his SUV with his shirt pulled up over his gun exposing it to the whole world. It was clearly on purpose. As he headed inside the gas station he covered his pistol with his shirt but he was printing like crazy. Even my GF noticed. The problem is that I live in Florida and they don't allow open carry here.

I struck up a conversation with him about his carry gun. Very nice guy. Not very often you see a black guy with a NRA sticker on his car.

When / as I get out I have to check my shirt, as it will do that and my shirt will catch while driving, etc. However here, it's not illegal per se if you have a CC license, just cover it and move on. Thank goodness the Legislature covered it in the law because they didn't want the cities (who can make open carry illegal) to start arresting CC holders for accidental exposures, while disarming, etc.

Here's what are considered PFA's in MI. Note to OP, a sports arena and 2500 capacity entertainment facillity are separate pfa's. My only advice is to know and comply with the (local) rules/laws, and if you decide not to, make sure that you're "totally" concealed.

    Pistol Free Areas

Individuals licensed to carry a concealed pistol by Michigan or another state are prohibited from carrying a concealed pistol on the following premises:

    - Schools or school property but may carry while in a vehicle on school property while dropping off or picking up if a parent or legal guardian

    - Public or private day care center, public or private child caring agency, or public or private child placing agency.

    - Sports arena or stadium

    - A tavern where the primary source of income is the sale of alcoholic liquor by the glass consumed on the premises

    - Any property or facility owned or operated by a church, synagogue, mosque, temple, or other place of worship, unless the presiding official allows concealed weapons

    - An entertainment facility that the individual knows or should know has a seating capacity of 2,500 or more

    - A hospital

    - A dormitory or classroom of a community college, college, or university

    - A Casino

"Premises" does not include the parking areas of the places listed above.

A pistol is subject to immediate seizure if the CPL holder is carrying a pistol in a "pistol free" area. The pistol is only subject to seizure if the holder is carrying it concealed. The following penalties may also be imposed:

First offense: State Civil Infraction, $500 fine, CPL permit suspended 6 months
Second offense: 90-day misdemeanor, $1000 fine, CPL permit revoked
Third and subsequent offenses: 4-year felony, $5000 fine, CPL permit revoked

Furthermore, effective March 29, 2001, per Administrative Order 2001-1 of the Michigan Supreme Court:

"Weapons are not permitted in any courtroom, office, or other space used for official court business or by judicial employees unless the chief judge or other person designated by the chief judge has given prior approval consistent with the court's written policy."

    MCG,
I knew arenas and venues seating more than 2500 are each separate GFZs, but thank you for pointing that out. I was trying to make the point that if the person was only a CPL holder they should definitely have known one or the other.

"There are crimes of commission and crimes of omission." I remember this from a man who used to come by the house for
the payment on the furniture. I was talking to him one day and he said good, honest people sometimes fail to do the right
thing because they believe it is not their business or doesn't involve them. Sometimes they are afraid to do the right thing.
I never forgot that or the numbered tattoo on his forearm.

Perfect example of a concealed carrier who thinks he's doing a great job concealing but in fact may as well be open carrying. This is what I am talking about when I say people who are anti-open carry and think they are concealing well make me laugh.

This is actually the second time I have made someone based on them wearing gun themed apparel. The first was a few years ago, I saw a guy wearing a t-shirt that said something to the effect of " peace through superior firepower" that was barely long enough to cover the bottom of his owb holster. Not very discreet...
