I tell 'em:"It's none of your business why I carry a firearm".
Thats a tough one! In my experience no matter what you tell those people you will never get them to agree with it! its just how there brain works (or dosent work)!! You can try tell them horror storys about attacks and robberys and rap but they still wont listen. I try and avoid those people in general and the conversation to keep my blood pressure in check!
I carry concealed, so the discussion never takes place.
Unless they are close family they shouldn't even know that you are packing. My wife, parents, grand mother and brother in law no one knows I carry. Talking to people like that is a waste of time.

Because one day they may be glad a gun toting hick like me is around to save their worthless fanny.
I don't disclose that I do carry.
I hear people say dumb stuff all the time. I have no delusion of being their educator.
If someone asks if I carry, depending on who they are and the context of the conversation, I may or may not disclose, but in a polite way.
If they ask my opinion, I'll engage the conversation based on sound logic. The reasons are almost endless. It boils down to the understanding that a concealed firearm is to be used purely as a defensive solution to only an immediate pending lethal threat. The safe holstered carry of a safe firearm by a properly trained individual that abides by 4 simple rules, ensures there will be no unnecessary risk.

My wife and son know. Other than that the guy that signed my permit. I shoot on my property so I don't even hang out at the range where everybody is showing off the latest and greatest. I can not fathom why anybody would tell somebody and even more bewildered why they would stop and have a conversation about it.
read my sig line...
Now, folks know I have a permit... It gets published in the paper. Folks know I like firearms. Some are anti. Some are not. I will discuss firearms and the new laws in Iowa regarding weapons carry.
Do I "educate" them? No. But I do love an argument... and many times I can sway their 100% anti position to one of live and let live. That's enough for me...

Most everyone in this thread all know why we carry, as previously stated above it's nobodys business. If your armed you alone should know it.. You risk to much to let people know. Your REALLY waisting your time entering into a dialog with someone.
Hey bandrich, what's wrong with being a lefty other than that the safety on my Ruger ( and most other firearms) is meant to be handled with the right hand ?
Unless you are deliberately trolling lefty sites like Daily Kos.... how would this come up?
I try not to talk to that sort of person. No point.
Most of my friends carry or hunt atleast and don't care if someone does. The rest don't know and I don't care.
The 4 people who know I carry already know why.
Nobody else ever needs to know, so I don't tell them anything at all.
