First date isn't a good idea, she might think your a pyscho with a gun. When do you bring up that you carry a gun? I'm thinking sooner then later because if you don't tell her it might cause trust issues or she thinks your hiding something. Is there a good place and time to tell her?
Tell after you stop the guy who tries to mug the two of you.

I wouldn't be in any great hurry. It's not that you're hiding something. You have no obligation to disclose anything. The purpose of dating is to get to know each other, and information is shared based on need to know and gained trust.
You decide when you think it's her business to know.

Maybe after you go to your 1st gun show, gun shop, or shooting session together.

I let my then GF (now wife) find out on her own when she came over after a few date. I intensionally left my holstered gun out on my dresser were she couldn't miss it.
Her first response was, OMG, you have a gun. My answer was "its Virginia, every one owns a gun here".

I had pondered this but my now wife beat me to the punch. After our 1st date, she requested a 2nd but the time and day was allready set aside to go to my father's land to "plink". I told her that I was going plinking that day and she asked what it was. After explaining, she said she wanted to go. She hasn't shot since but I think seeing me handling firearms and shooting a .22 herself led her to realize that this was a part of my life. That was 8 years ago. She used to laugh when I'd get to her apt. and it would take me minutes to undress all my "gear".
If you're serious about this girl, let the topic come up naturally because it's part of your routine. Don't be clandestine but don't be obvious (gun nut) about it.
Let her find it under the pillow...Its a win, win....

you making some cryptic remarks regarding crime, violence, police and perhaps people needing to police themselves.
the 3rd date for sure would be more direct on the subject.
