Firefighters shot at for not helping cat

KINGMAN, Ariz. - A man angry at firefighters who refused to rescue a cat from a tree was arrested after he started shooting at the fire crew, officials said.

Jeffrey Cullen, 58, was charged with four felony counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, Mohave County Sheriff's spokeswoman Trish Carter said.

A three-person fire crew went to Cullen's home Thursday when he reported a tree fire, but found no blaze, Hualapai Valley Fire Department spokeswoman Sandy Edwards said.

Instead, Cullen told firefighters he wanted a cat rescued from his tree and knew they would only respond to a fire call, Edwards said. A battalion chief told Cullen to call animal control or wait for the cat to get hungry and come down.

Cullen apparently didn't like the response, Edwards said.

"He went back into the house, got a small black revolver and came outside shooting," she said.

The firefighters and a 12-year-old boy who had come to see the fire truck ran for their lives, Edwards said. No one was injured.

Deputies arrested Cullen after a brief standoff and struggle.

    I'm Wondering

I'm Wondering who is going to feed his cat & clean the litter box while he is stuck in jail?
I guess he didn't think about that before he started shooting bullets at human beings.
What a complete and total idiot.
Screwed for life...because his doggone cat climbed up a tree.
How moronic can one person get?

This is the sort of things that paint gun owners as being irrational people. I hate to see things like this because it give ammunition to the anit-gun crusaders.

Some pretty weak firefighters. Several of the ones I used to know were pretty good at making a "Hooligan" tool stick.

Ummm, yeah. That'll get them to fetch the kitty.

I'll bet the cat was still up in the tree when he was driven off in the back of the nice policeman's car. Maybe he has nice neighbors that will adopt the smarter of the two mammals.

I read this on another board but it made good sense: "I've yet to see a cat skeleton up in a tree".

Idiot. I love my cat also, but if the thing is stupid enough to get stuck in a tree, it will either have to get over it's fear and come down or just sit up there until it dies. I'm 100% sure it will find a way down.

After the arrest I can think of a damned good way to get the cat down:

Connect hoses. Activate pumps. Aim at cat. Release water pressure.

    What an idiot.

Idiots abound: folks drive drunk and do the road rage thing but auto ownership never comes under attack. People do unimaginably stupid things with virtually every conceivable bit of hardware, but we get the maximum dump when Joe Stupid does it with a gun.

His mental acumen needs a jump start to reach zero. Stupidity is (or should be) a self correcting situation, sooner or later. The anti's will have a field day with this and other reports like it.

It takes all kinds. Yet another good reason for CHL.

If I were a wagering man, I'd bet $$ the guy has a history of familiarity with a certain brand of amphetamine which is all too common in CA these days. Reporting a 'tree fire' for a cat? Then shooting at the rescuers?
I dunno, but I'll wager that he's got priors, or some type disqualifying of history.
    There's more to this one.
