    Question Michigan "official" no-gun sign

Reading the thread about the Texas 30.06 sign made me wonder. Do any of you fellow Michiganders know of a similar, official, sign for the state of Michigan? We have the pistol free zones but how about other businesses that post "No weapons" signs. Do these carry the weight of law?

In Michigan many gun owners carry a small card that in essence says “No Guns = No $$$$” although I have never seen one in this state it is considered a misnomer and all they can do is ask you to leave, I would A. ignore the sign and finish my business there and never return, B. find a new place to do business with that is gun friendly, C. make sure the place knows of my choice all the way to top management. D. let all other gun owners know where to boycott.

I think the state specified the size and wording for businesses, but am not sure what those specs are.

The only sign I've ever seen was at Southland Mall in Taylor a while back. As I recall it jsut some red text on the glass door that was almost unreadable.

Do these carry the weight of law?
I'm assuming it varies from state to state, but in Michigan does such a sign mean you're legally disallowed from carrying into such a store (and thereby subject to be trussed and 'dipped' if caught), or merely legally required to leave if asked?

    The short answer... NO

When businesses post "NO GUN" signs, they are expressing their wishes that people with guns are not welcome. This DOES NOT have the force of law. If you are "made" carrying in one of these stores and are asked to leave by an employee or management, you must do so. Failure to do so is grounds for a trespassing charge. If you are made and NOT asked to leave, then continue whatever it was you were doing. You are breaking no law unless you refuse to leave.

That being said, if a business falls under one of the NO CARRY ZONES, then you can't carry. These are listed "roughly" on the back of your CCW license, depending on the county in which it was issued.

It says "This license allows the licensee to carry a pistol on or about his person anywhere in the state except a licensee shall not carry a concealed pistol at a school, on school property, day care center, child placing agency, sports arena, stadium, bar or tavern licensed to serve liquor, church, synagogue, mosque, temple or other place of worship, entertainment facility seating more than 2500 people, hospital, dormitory or classroom or a college or university or casino or as otherwise prohibited by law. Consult the statute for complete wording of pistol free zones. "

This means that if a business you are going to falls into say, an entertainment facility seating more than 2500 people (large movie theatre etc) then you are prohibited from carrying.

In regard to places that serve liquor (by the glass), you have to KNOW if that place receives 51% of its revenue from alcohol sales. If it does, it is off limits. Have fun trying to find out.

Don't forget about places that are off limits by federal law as well. Debatably, the post office is one of these.

    Good luck and happy packing.

In the state of Michigan, there is an exception to the no carry zones. Michigan State University, Univ. of Mich, and Wayne State univ. somehow got a state law passed that forbade concealed carry ANYWHERE on their campuses (usually off limits are univ. dorms or classrooms).
Now, i've spent a TON of time trying to get a handle on this thing. I've spoken to the Dept. of Police/Public Safety at MSU, some prosecutor at 54-B district court in east lansing, and spoke with a lawyer. All 3 (note: the lawyer was at my NRA course giving the CCW portion. he was NOT retained by me) said that CCW on those 3 campuses was a big no-no.

I can't find any information on the state website about this. I did happen to run into a MSU police officer who said that CCW is illegal on campus but you can have a weapon in your vehichle.

So, not to divert the thread but that's my "michigan" $.02

In my class, it was stated there wasn't a specific sign requirement. It could be simply a gun with the circle and slash, the words "No Guns" or "No Weapons" or whatever. It has to be posted in a conspicuous place on the entrance(s). However, your employer can ban carring on company premises, including parking lot, and this DOES have the wieght of law.

As for holding weight of law, no. Not unless you refuse to leave, then it is tresspassing, actually armed tresspassing and that is a felony kiss your guns bye-bye.

There is no set sign in Michigan like Texas Has. Like others have said, It just has to be conspicuous.

    Exmasonite,

I do have a couple emails into a good source in Michigan and the Mich. State Police/Michigan AG asking about this. Will post what I find our here about Michigan State University, Univ. of Mich, and Wayne State Univ.

    Answer:

    Gary,
This is a very gray area. What it boils down to is not so much law as it is whether or not the legislature actually has any authority over the policies of our State Universities. The legislature controls funding for these institutions, but policy is a different story because the Board of Regents for these Universities are actually state wide elected officials by the people of the State of Michigan. Therefore, they are equals with the legislature and not subjugated to it.

    Gary-
thanks for that info. it was explained to me that the state law was passed b/c it was the only way to MAKE it law (local laws being unable to supersede state law, etc). honestly, i find the university campus to probably be one of the least safe places in the grand scheme of things.... would definitely prefer to be able to carry.

You’re telling me, 60's style hippie freaks teaching their values along with the school curriculum to impressionable kids, fortunately my 19 year old is very mind set in his view of guns and the Second Amendment, he raises heck for the Komiefornia types, makes me proud.
