Some statistics about 2A and CCW

    Hey Guys,

i had a discussion about the Zimmerman/Martin-Shooting on some german USA-forums, which eventually turned into a "does CCW really make sense and save liefes"-argument. Those guys on the other forum are mostly pro-2A and pro-ccw. However, some of them were wondering if wether or not CCW is a smart idea. So, i did some research for the last couple of days, trying to use mostly neutral sources like government statistics, some pro-2A websites and even contra-2A websites, and i came up with some information and statistics that (of course) support not only the 2A, but also CCW in general. Even though, most of you guys here know that already, i thought it might be interesting for you all as well. Feel free to use all that information to convince some antis, maybe you can turn them around ;). So, here we go:

[Disclaimer: I tried to get all facts together, but of course i had to relay on "the internet" to get all the numbers i needed. I can't guarantee that all numbers are a 100% accurate!]

The population in the US, at of March 2012 was an estimated 313.246.000 people.

According to information provided by the weapon industry [2], there are currently around 300.000.000 Firearms owned by civilians. According to estimations and surveys amongst citizens, we are looking at the following numbers:

40%-45% of all US households own at least one firearm.
30%-34% of all adults own at least one firearm.
17%-19% of all adults own at least one handgun.

Lets look at the crime rates. Based on FBI statistics in 2010 [3]:

    Population: 308.475.538
    Violent Crimes: 1.246.248
    Murder: 14.748
    Rape: 84.767
    Robbery: 367.832
    Assault & Battery: 778.901

Based on CCW-Statistics provided by most of the US States and estimations, around 7200000 CCW Licenses were issued until March 2012 [4]. Not counting people that are allowed to open or conceal carry without needing a licence! Now, it's kinda hard to find some reliable sources of how often CCW-Licensees were involved in unjustified shootings. So i thought, the best way to find that information, would be to use the ridiculous "CCW Killer"-Statistics published by the Violence Policy Center [5], look through all the numbers for one year and break their statistics down to actual unjustified shootings. If you never seen their webpage, they claim that since 1997 there were over 400 unjustified shootings, comminted by people licensed to CCW. Looking at their numbers, i found out that they even count suicides, crimes, shootings by people that were but are no longer carrying a CCW license, gun accidents and other incidents as unjustified shootings by CCW Licensees. Just to give you an idea what they count as "unjustified shooting by CCW":

    - 11/11/2008: A Woman shot her husband, who was terminally suffering from cancer, after he begged her to help him end his life.
    - 4/20/2011: A mother left her loaded gun unsecured in her room, where her toddler got a hold of it, causing a discharge and killing the mother
    - 8/19/2911: A drive-by-shooting, commited by several gang members, one of them was licenced to CCW
    - 3/1/2009: A mental defective person went on a killing spree, shooting 9 innocent people and eventually himself.
    - 7/20/2011: This one was actually a justified shooting by a CCW-Licensee, who shot an attacker, but the BG was able to wrestle the gun away from the GG and shot him death, using his own weapon. Still counts as unjustified shooting in their eyes, apparently because not the BG but the GG died...
    - Shooting incidents in states that dont require a licence to CCW
    - Criminal activities in which a currently or formerly licenced CCW-Holder was involved, such as "drug deals gone wrong" and plain simple murder.
    - Pretty much all kinds of AD/NDs causing dead, which were caused by a CCW-Holder or in which a CCW-Holders gun was involved.

So, their numbers are pretty much BS. If i break their numbers for 2011 down, we see the following:

Total "unjustified shootings" in 2011: 54
Suicides, AD/NDs causing death, etc: 17
Criminal activities, shooting sprees, etc: 31
Actual unjustified shootings: 2 (in both cases prosecution seems to be still pending)
CCW killed because he got his gun used against him: 1

Now, lets compare that to some other numbers (Sorry, i have to relay on statistics from 2008 on this one, couldn't find more current sources):

Based on FBI statistics from 2008 [6], there were 245 justified shootings by private citizens. Out of those shootings, 176 occurred within private residences were no CCW was necesarry to own/carry a firearm and 69 shootings involved people legally carrying their CCW. Also in 2008, we had an estimated number of 108000 defensive gun uses (in which the plain sight of a weapon stopped the thread). According to other legal statistics [7], out of these 69 CCW-shooting, 1 was found unjustified.

Some people argue that armed citizens only cause criminals to get more violent when committing a crime, stating that giving a bad guy what he wants will cause him to grab his swag, turn away and not harming anyone. Now, let's look at that as well:

A government survey of male felons in 1982 [8] found:
    - 34% had been "scared off, shot at, wounded, or captured by an armed victim"
    - 40% had decided not to commit a crime because they "knew or believed that the victim was carrying a gun"
    - 69% personally knew other criminals who had been "scared off, shot at, wounded, or captured by an armed victim

It is kinda hard to find some reliable sources that show the decrease or increase of crime statistics after CCW laws, so i tried to use raw data and link it together [9], learning that crime rates in each state dropped an average of 24.8 % after the respective state placed CCW in action. Some more accurate data is available for some states at [10].

Looking at Great Britain, which pretty much banned ALL privately owned firearms, we learn that not only the crime rate went up and is now higher than it is in the US [11], but also the number of firearm injuries climbed a 110% [12].

In 2007, we had 613 accidental firearm injuries causing death, constituting 0.5% of all fatal accidents that year. Out of those, 65 (0.05%) involved children under the age of 14. The number of nonfatal firearm accidents (not necessarily shooting wounds, but accidents in which a firearm was involved) was 15.698, constituting of 0.05% of all injuries that required treatment in an ER [13].

I think it's not only pretty save to say that 2A and CCW save lives, but it's nice to actually use the numbers to prove it. Hope at least some of you guys find this information useful...

Again, all the above information in a nutshell:

    Population USA total: 313246000
    Privately owned weapons, approx: 300000000

    Households With a Gun 40-45%
    Adults Owning a Gun 30-34%
    Adults Owning a Handgun 17-19%

    Violent Crime Rates in 2010:
    Population 308,745,538
    Violent Crimes 1,246,248
    Murder 14,748
    Rape 84,767
    Robbery 367,832
    Assault 778,901

    # of unjustified gun deaths, provided by the Violence Policy Center, for 2011:
    Total: 54

Out of those 54 gun deaths, there were:
Gun accidents, suicides, neglicent discharges, etc: 17
Murders, involved in illegal activities, drive-by-shootings, etc: 31
Actual unjustified shootings: 2 (of with all 2 cases are still pending)
One incident where the CCW-Licensees shooting was ruled justified, but the attacker shot back, killing the CCW-Licensee - which somehow is counted as unjustified shooting by the VPC

Justified Shootings in 2008, according to FBI-Statistics: 245
Out of those 245 shootings, CCW-Licensees were involved in 69 Shootings.
Out of those 245 Shootings, 1 was ruled unjustified.

Defensive Gun Uses (in which the sight of the weapon already stopped the attack) in 2008, according to FBI-Statistics:
    approx. 108000

Government Survey of male felons in 1982 found:
    - 34% had been "scared off, shot at, wounded, or captured by an armed victim"
    - 40% had decided not to commit a crime because they "knew or believed that the victim was carrying a gun"
    - 69% personally knew other criminals who had been "scared off, shot at, wounded, or captured by an armed victim

Crime Rates throughout the Country dropped an average of 24.8% in all states, since the introduction of CCW in those states.
Crime Rates in GB rose since the introduction of stricter gun laws, effectively banning all privately owned weapons. Crime Rates in GB are now higher than in the US.
The number of firearm inflicted wounds in GB is up 110% since the firearm ban.

Fatal firearm accidents in 2008 in the US: 613 (children under 14: 65), constituting 0.5% (children under 14: 0.05%) of all fatal accidents that year.
Nonfatal firearm injuries in 2008 in the US: 15.698, constituting of 0.05% of all Injuries treated in emergency rooms.

A lot of good that would do for most of them. Facts be damned, only emotional lies and half-truths in order to justify their position.

Here is a very compelling interview with none other that the one and only Dr. John Lott,
At this link; The End of Myth: An Interview with Dr. John Lott | Strike-The-Root: A Journal Of Liberty
He wrote the most thorough book on the study of firearms/crime in the history of the world.
    More Guns Less Crime.
It is the best ammunition for quieting arguments from people who think they know it all, and say guns should be banned

Thanks for trying to explain our country and its diverse laws to people who know NO freedoms like The United States of America
