    "Command voice" works.

I can't carry at work... let me rephrase that... I can not carry at work... No need anyway. I'm behind two badge activated doors to the secure lab.

Last night as I got off shift @ 11:00 pm, the oncoming shift tech told me about my coworker, who had just left, being "accosted" by a 'solicitous" young lady... We were all standing out front as she was relating this story...

My cel phone rang... co worker that had just left, telling me to go back inside... I said no, the oncoming tech had told me all about this young lady.

This is what she (the oncoming tech) told me:

"Last week, our last day before the weekend. This gal comes up to me (the oncoming tech, a female) and doesn't know what to say... but when my coworker shows up, she's all over him asking him
"...for a couple of bucks for gas 'cause her friends had ditched her (She was on foot)."

The second tech said "I don't have any money."

Meth head solicitors reply: "sure you do, gimme some."

2nd tech: "No, I don't carry money to work, I don't need it here."

Meth head: "Well, could you give me a ride?" If you're nice to me... I could be 'nice' to you..."

2nd tech: "No, I have to go in to go to work, besides my truck is clear across the plant."

    Meth head walks off.

    That was last week.

Last night, she's back asking my co-worker for money as he leaves... and then the oncoming tech relates the story... I get the call... and here comes the little lady now...

She comes up the stairs... Looks me in the eye, smiles (black teeth, hence the suspicion of meth abuse, early stages. And twitchy/nervous/bouncing from one foot to the other... ).... Before she gets a word out.... I said, "No, I don't have money for gas. No, I won't give you a ride, even if you're nice to me. No, I CAN NOT help you." In my stern voice...

"Okay" She says... and off she goes.

Truly a sad deal... but I'm not gonna give the gal money to further her own demise... Our plant is two blocks from police HQ, BTW... She was gutsy... I'll give her that.

It's sad... I've spent a good portion of my life, being the person that tries to help someone like that.

Take them to the grocery store, buy them food, pray with them, etc... Sadly, I'm not aware of ever making much of a difference.

I stopped when I got married and started my own family. My family's security comes first, and there is little room for compromise.

Or, maybe it was all the NO's and not so much the command voice!

The streets are rough, I firmly believe that everyone is 30-90 days from homelessness or being in a less than desirable situation due to one affliction or another.
I have at one point or another while I am working or on my own time given people a hand out, if you are hungry I'll go get you something to eat, give you a jacket if you are cold, etc. I will not give you money or be aggressively panhandled or solicited for money.
I'd stop in at the police station and let them know what is happening before they decide that they really need what you have.

I hope you called plant security and had them escort her off the property. If she is in fact on drugs, you never know when or if she will flip out and attack someone. The best place for her is in a detox cell. It may not do any good, but at least it can't be said no one tried.

Not on plant property. The lab is across the public street from the plant.

Plant security force is A JOKE. Slovenly, unkempt, underpaid gate jockeys. We're a potential target to terrorism. Security would let 'em in!

Maybe she just thought you were a little too ugly to be 'nice' to.

    It's pretty simple --

If you try to 'reason' with someone, they'll continue to pressure you. If you crush all hope, they'll walk away.

I never said that I was a nice person. I'm safe, so are those I hold dear.

I made great use of the "commanding voice" in my years in the field of EMS. It always seemed that men responded to me better than the guys, if they were unruly with the guys, they responded well to me. Of course it worked the other way around with women. I would just irritate them, but they would buckle under and fly right for the guys. There were those that neither could make head way with...so they usually got either strapped down to the cot or turned over to the LEOs. Funny how that seems to work.

The pan handlers must be getting used to being rejected.

I saw a new tactic the other day down in Knoxville. I just parked at Best Buy and this guy approaches me with a red plastic gas can in his hand. He wanted a couple of buck for gas to get to work. Told him I couldn't help and he disappeared just like magic.

True enough... No guarantees you can draw and kill your assailant in time either... but it was worth a try...

Those that want to change their life will go to an organization for support. Those who merely want a handout panhandle and beg off individuals who has a sympathetic heart.

If it makes you sleep better at night, give them money. But you are fooling yourself to think you are trying to help.

To really help, volunteer at one of the places where they go for help. Also ask the workers, psychiatrists and social workers there if they give money to people on the street? They'll probably laugh.

I don't deal with panhandlers. All it does is take away my hard earned money. I donate to charities where I know my money is used for healthy, helpful purposes, not to give someone a quick fix or a pint of booze.
