You're walking home after work. It's dark. A man of this size suprises you, jumps you from an alley, and pulls a knife. You have a few seconds to react.
You pull your .380 and his fat stops them. You die.

    You're kidding, right?

Does this mean that losing weight can be bad for your health?

Somewhat related to this whole penetration debate is a case I had a while back where a .40s&w round entered a persons neck on the left side and never exited. Lodged an inch short of exiting the right side. Measure the width of your own neck and you get the idea.

I've also seen a 44 mag round at less than 3 feet enter dead center sternum and not exit the torso. Lodged in rib cage behind left lung.

Real life ballistics. No guarantees. Heavy and fast. I want the odds in my favor.

    He's kidding. I mean, he's kidding, right?

I carry a 380 because it's my gun and my neck. Now, it may not be the ONLY thing I carry.....

Judging by the picture. If he pulls a knife its probably just to cut a piece of his chicken.

Giving the OP benefit of the doubt, there's not much fat in front of the sternum, knees, center of face.

Hey, now... That chicken is Hot... AND TASTY... What more could a fat guy on a bench want? The best course of action here is not to carry a BUG to your .380, but an extra bucket of Hot and Tasty Chicken. If you really want to be tactically sound, get a sharpie and write "& Crispy" on the box.

I carry flat-nosed fmj in my 380. Under-penetration isn't an issue even with your standard practice ammo which will pass clean through a 20" block of ballistic gel and keep going. Buffalo Bore 100gr hardcast fmj will pass through 30"+. So as long as I do my part(proper shot placement), 380 WILL protect me.

because every one of them has failed to stop at one time or another.
I pull a grenade and drop it....yea I know we both die, but he dies first! ha

The real scenario as stated is if you haven't trained for a surprise attack you'll be lucky if you accomplish anything. If you have then the .380 will do vs the knife.
