Good: FL Governor rejects gun ban for RNC

Florida Governor Rick Scott has shot down a request by Tampa's mayor to allow local authorities to ban guns from the city's downtown during the Republican National Convention in August.

Citing Second Amendment protections in the U.S. Constitution, Scott told Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn that conventions and guns have co-existed since the nation's birth and would continue to do so during the four-day event beginning August 27.

I don't know what the article said about the Gov. but I can say that any idea of a ban is just plain foolish.
we have laws, laws bound both citizens an government, FLA law says that localities cannot make any laws regarding guns, that power is for only the state government. State laws say that if you have a CWFL you can carry a concealed weapon everywhere except for specific locations banned by state and federal laws, towns and counties in FLA cannot do any kind of banning on their own.
A ban like this would be against state law and the Gov. doesn't have the power to override laws already on the books.
Only a judge could deem the law invalid or the legislature could change the laws. a mayor cannot beg for a temporary ban.
Gov. Scott has no choice but to deny the request. and for that we thank him.

Say what you want about Rick Scott, but he seems to have his head in the right place more than any Governor we've had in a while. It's a nice change.

I would argue that during a time of such an event is when you would need them more, not less. If anything, they should institute a requirement that everyone carry.

There is something wrong with the story... .well not the story itself - but its reporting...

Yahoo CANADA? Really - why is this not being covered by domestic news agencies? Oh wait - that's right - they are all in the tank for the left and a victory for the rights of the people and for common sense just isn't part of their agenda!

    Good find, Cook74!

Rachel Maddow (I think it is a woman, but who can tell?) mentioned this on her/his/its show and obviously she/he/shim is a socialist pig so he/she/it is against guns in all forms. She/he/it said "so now you can feel safer with all those unseen guns". I HATE that show and I always catch myself watching it and screaming at the TV. Anyways, just more backwards thinking from the socialist left.

Out of curiosity, I wonder under what authority the mayor assumes they even have the legal ability to impose such a ban...

The mayor was attempting to employ the authority of stupidity and self-righteousness that almost all such people (who try to restrain the rights of others) employ.

Scott's response was reported in the US media - at least Fox News - earlier last week. Looks like the Canadian press is behind.

As one of the comments on the article said, "Those who are most upset by this are the ones who would never attend a Republican convention anyway."

It is so rare, but so great to see a politician actually understand what the 2A means and to stand up for it. Cudos to him.
