Always keep your wits about you, trust your gut, and if in doubt, don't stop until you can get a hold of a 911 operator to verify the legitimacy of the traffic stop.
Stopping to help stranded motorists (if that was a ploy to get someone to stop) is always going to be a high risk endeavor. I would rather use my cell phone and call it in as a stranded motorist needing assistance and let the local LEO's come and investigate it.

We recently had a guy impersonating a police officer and doing so in one of the nicest areas of town...an area where no one would ever consider that the OFFICER was an imposter. He was responsible for several rapes. I agree with the above posters. If something just doesn't seem right, DON'T STOP. Call 911 to make sure the cop is the real deal. Apparently, this guy was very convincing. He had a uniform and all the usual gear, including a gun and police car that looked pretty real. They haven't caught him, but it seems as though he's moved on. It helped that in this area, all the police drive brand new, decked out cars that would be difficult to copy. However, he usually struck at night, when all you could really see were the flashing red and blue lights. He's probably still doing it, but just moved to a less affluent area of town.

In Mississippi, police said that drivers being pulled over have the right to put their flashers on and driver slowly to a lighted and populated area before coming to a stop.

Since everyone has a cell phone, even kids in grade school, it is no longer necessary to stop to help motorists who are broke down.
Their call is as valid as yours.
You know, it seems to me that about every town has the cop want-to-be and frankly KY. has more than its share. Fake DES, EM, EMA etc. are well represented....

Had to drive through MS yesterday, had my red alert on the whole time. Saw a lot of people pulled over, but nothing out of the ordinary.
