Moving to California (San Diego area) - A few Questions

I am curious how people are carrying weapons on their person and within their vehicles in the San Diego area of California. Is there a way to do it which is not in violation of the law, or which is generally overlooked in the rare circumstance it is discovered a weapon is within a vehicle or on your person?

Being from Arizona (where I always open carried) and then moving to WA (where I always conceal carry), moving to CA is a new issue to deal with. I was hoping to learn more about what people are doing, what works, what doesn't, what the real threats from law enforcement are vs. the worry threats that never come to pass, etc.

At a minimum I want weapons in my vehicles. I was reading that some people separate the clip from the gun (i.e. put the gun in the driver's side door and the clip in the glove compartment) - is that a viable method of keeping a firearm in your vehicle?

Also, any direct pointers to the applicable gun laws would be welcome as well.

I believe, meaning I am not 100% certain you can have an unloaded gun in your car but it must be in the trunk or in a locked container, and glovebox does not count. From hearsay only I have heard SD county is tough to get your Ccw. Again not gospel. Good luck, stay safe and keep us posted. There was a sight I used to help me get mine, if you would like it pm me. I am in San Bernardino county where ccws abound, despite what many people will comment about this beautiful but backwards state of ours.

Why would you ever want to move to california ?. By moving to california you can kiss most of your gun rights good bye, and getting a concealed carry permit in san diego is next to impossible, and open carry is against the law in california.

You would be better off finding another state to move to. Everything in california is over rated, over priced, and over regulated.

concealed upon the person by any citizen of the United States over the age of 18 years
who resides or is temporarily within this state, and is not within the excepted classes
prescribed by Penal Code Sections 12021 or 12021.1 or Welfare and Institutions Code sections
8100 or 8103, provided that the following applies:
- the firearm is within a motor vehicle and it is locked in the vehicle's trunk or in a locked container
in the vehicle other than the utility or glove compartment, and;
- when the firearm is carried by the person to or from any motor vehicle for any lawful purpose, the
firearm must be contained in a locked container while being physically carried. (Penal Code §

As far as CCW, you could have picked better places in California. San Diego is almost at the bottom as far as chances in hell that you'll get a CCW. You're better off moving to Sacramento.

Click on the map of California that gives your chances of CCW by county. Doesn't look good for you. Love the city and state of California but......

The same thing that's in most other states. Rights. I could never live in CA. In fact, I refuse to even visit until they do some things correctly.

As for the OP, you're more than likely screwed. Unless you get a permit, I wouldn't even chance having a gun in your vehicle there.

First let me state that I lived in california for 47 years, so I can speak from first hand experiance how bad it it there.

Idaho is a free state with out a lot of useless bulls**t laws. anyone in Idaho can get a permit to carry a gun. I can own any kind of gun I here, including anything full auto and silencers. There is no crime here because everyone has a gun or carries a gun. I can ride my ATV to town if I want to and its legal to do so. I can register my truck here for a year for $48. dollars, and there are no smog checks required. I could go on and on, but im sure you get the point. try doing any of this in california and see how far you get.

San Diego's Sheriff Gore doesn't give out CCWs unless you are rich enough, a politician, or a personal friend. Good luck. I go there fairly often and carry always with my CCW from a county with a good Sheriff.

So, why California, and why San Diego?

Welcome to the forum. As to your question. Unless it is a forced move, that you don't have any choice in, why would you want to move to the land of high taxes, over inflated housing, suppressed 2A rights and a nanny state mentality?
