I'm with you, except for one detail, and that is that alcohol not only impairs judgement, it also impairs motor function. Even after just one drink, the process of impairment has begun. I am simply stating that because of this, I choose not to drink while carrying. But again, it comes down to personal choice and responsibility, knowing your limits. If you can function well after having a couple or three drink, go for it.

We're stating the same thing as far as how we feel about the subject generically, we're just approaching it from different perspectives. I make a motion that we agree to agree. Do I hear a second?

Same here in Michigan. if your carrying you cannot have ANY alchohol! I have had exactly one beer since I started carrying 4 years ago and my daughter bought me that one at a concert for my birthday. I wouldn't have even had that one except she bought it before I realized she was going to. If she had asked I would have just asked for a diet coke.

I watched a test one time on alcohol, personal estimation of imparement, and ability to function. Without exception the personal estimation of imparement was low. They did the ability to function test and asked test takers how they thought they had done, and received pretty much the same response. They brought the test takers back 24 hours later, and let them watch the video tape of their estimations, and their function tests. The test takers saw that they were much more impared than they recognized at the time and had no idea how badly they had done on the function test.

The conclusion is that we are not good judges of our own abilities when we drink alcohol - even a little alcohol.

Am I saying you can't drink? No! But be honest with yourself and realize that, in most instances, with alcohol, you will think you are more able to function than you really are.

So, in some states it is legal to carry a firearm and consume adult beverages. Here, in Nevada, the legal limit for drinking and carrying is 0.10 bac (dui is 0.08) so I can drink quite a bit and still be legal to carry.



Being a resposible drinker is being a responsible drinker. I think you just don't trust yourself to behave like an adult once you have started to drink. I do trust myself. I agree, those who cannot have a drink and continue to behave should not drink. But this has nothing to do with guns!




So, in your view, if I go out to eat with my wife and have a glass of wine with my meal I should no longer be allowed to defend her against attackers! I disagree.

I agree with you Ken. Here in Colorado we are not allow to be under the influence and be armed. Case law suggests that is the same as DUI (0.08 BAC). We also have a term DWAI which is a judgement call. I won't drink enough to be even close to DUI and drive, likewise with CCW. One glass of wine with dinner and no drinking if I'm not eating. I also don't like to be far away from home and drink anyway. If I am in my own home then I may drink some, but never to intoxication. I also have a Nevada CCW and like the laws in Nevada. If I'm dead does it really matter if I was drinking?? I obviously was not able to protect myself because I left my CCW at home or my motor skill were impared. Either way is dead, no Mulligans.

This is true, that is how drivers in Colorado end up with a DWAI. Add high altitude and it is even worse. That is why I never drink on the Golf Course. It affects my motor skills. I guess so at the end of the day I need to not drink away from home. So much for the wine I spoke of earlier.

I had an issue dealing with this last night. I drove for the family when we went out to dinner last night. I left my .38 locked in my glove box since I knew I'd have a beer or two. I ended up drinking only one, but that was enough for me not to want to carry a firearm.

I know it runs against the grain for this forum, but I never disarm, except within the confines of my castle, temporary or permanent. Just don't do it. I'm good with it if you want to, but I won't. We used to have a policy with everyone dropping their pistols on top of a refrigerator when alcohol was involved, but then you got drunks handling pistols, at the end of the evening, and while we never had any problems, it's a risk not worth taking.

I realize that complacency can result in fatalities and alcohol further compounds this, but so can being unarmed, when you're used to being armed at all times. I don't handle my holstered sidearm any more or any less. It's holstered when I put my pants on, and unholstered when I take them off. If I need it, I need it. I also don't drink to excess any longer. Old age does have benefits. :)

I have SecureIt safe in each of my vehicles bolted under the seats to secure my weapons when there is a need to do so. I also have long gun locks in the trunk of my vehicle. Do I drink? yes, but never to the excess.

When you have a drink or two at home, do you first unload all your guns in the house, and take them over to your neighbor's for safekeeping?

My neighbor came over the other day to visit and to have a nice cold Sudsss with conversation. The first thing I did was disarm myself at the kitchen table by unloading magazine from my 1911.

I keep a gun safe in the car. If I am out and have a drink, the gun goes into the safe prior to the first sip. If I am home, it goes into the home safe.

Speaking of drinking hate to steal a thread.but..... What if I went out drinking and came home drunk. As I lay in my bed guys break in and start to in ade my house. I'm drunk but mentally there to know shtf and I need to protect myself and do by stopping the threat with deadly force. Am I ok??? Or screwed??

Guess that be deside by how good a lawyer you have and the grand jurys review.
