If all you have is a hammer, everything appears to be a nail. Having a less than lethal means of defense is certainly always better than only having a lethal means of defense. Whether you're 75% more likely to need to use less than lethal, or 10% more likely to need to use less than lethal means, if you haven't got any on you, then you have 0% of choosing that option.
More tools in the tool box is 100% better than fewer tools in the tool box.
I carry Sabre P-22-CS, which is a combination of CS/Pepper and has a UV dye in it. I don't think it is as potent as the Fox Labs stuff, I just haven't gotten around to getting myself some of the Fox.
Just remember that shot placement is much more important with what you carry than how big a bang you get with each trigger pull.

The spray is what I use. Fox and red Sabre are the most popular and what I carry.
One of the criticisms of OC is it is not a 100% effective ( about 90% per Berkley Study). While true it misses the main selling points: non lethal and multiple combatants. The other missing points are strategy ... Unless a LEO the goal is to just get away not to engage. Additionally it is not either / or at a $10.00 or so cost point, I just carry it

I carry my .44 long barrel Super Blackhawk in Bear country. I would not go lower than a .45 ACP unless I have the spouse's .357 hunting pistol. I have factory Bear loads for the .44, however this is about spray.
All I can say is when in WO and MT fishing, I carry the spray too, but that is not the primary thing I reach for.

I have read that in a car or back packing a can of wasp spray works very well. To bad they don't make it in smaller cans.

Most encounters can be resolved with non lethal force. Although I always carry a handgun (or two) I also carry pepper spray. The Mace Pepper spray gun is a great alternative. As far as the bear, the Guard Alaska Bear Repellent is the only approved by the EPA to deter all species of bears and even works on wet bear fur. That's your best bet.
Is there any difference in the brands, realistically? Like Sabre vs. Counter Assault vs. the Guard Alaska stuff? Lets talk the higher strength stuff of all of them (except the Guard Alaska - thats a bear-only can so it only works in the bear category).
I think Fox Labs has the highest concentration of pepper.

pepper sptay/OC is nice, but it doesn't work on everyone. What does work on everyone is a tazer, an ASP, and a sap.
I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do. I am free, no matter what rules surround me. If I find them tolerable, I tolerate them; if I find them too obnoxious, I break them. I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do.
I carry Sabre Red but I don't know why I went with that brand. Read something somewhere. I also carry a Kahr CM9 every time I leave the house for over a year now. If I would opt to spray vs. shoot I hope the BG would not feel like laughing at me since my Sabre Red is in a pink container. Gander Mtn. was donating $2.00 to breast cancer if you bought the pink one. Bought two one for my wife and the other is in my right front jeans pocket.![]()
