Wow! Just like in Total Recall. Life imitating fiction. Just looks like infrared to me.

“The device reads the specific form of natural energy emitted by people and objects known as terahertz,” Kelly said at the Police Foundation’s annual breakfast.

“If something is obstructing the flow of radiation, for example a weapon, the device will highlight that object.”
    HUH?????

That sounds like some kind of New Age whackiness.

One should never let political types speak about technology.

In a place with a total (or near total) ban on weaponry, this sort of detection device could be seeing some real usage on the streets. Imagine speeding "bans" (laws) and the use of speeding detectors. Imagine this feature being added to city cameras all over the place, on every street and corner, at key intersections and buildings, in all noted public venues ...

If you carry enough ammo, it should block it - lead, get it?

Why not just hire Superman. With his x-ray vision no need for special equipment. Honestly though, I can see court challenges right off the bat, for unlawful searches.

What happens if a bunch a people carry a gun shaped object, all in a mass protest of this technology?

    Overwhelm them with false positives!

I can hear it on the first day they set this system up. "Holy crap! Look at all the guns!"

Well, being NYC, I'm betting the first few days of active use will result in quite a different comment: "Gee, where're we gonna put 'em all? I mean, there are only so many cells in the jail."

I sometimes carry a LCP in my back right pocket. How can this tell the difference between a holstered LCP (mine is squared to prevent printing) and a typical wallet? I'd have the same concern for front pocket carry and a smart phone.
