What % of the population carrys regularly?

I am sure this has been discussed, but I just spent a bunch of time searching and couldn't find the stat. I want to know how many people regularly carry a gun (legal). I know the stats for CCW license holders, and I know that the number I'm looking for will be a rather broad estimate. Anyone know how many people carry regularly.

(Sorry if this has been discussed to death here)

    Thanks!

I don't see how you would be able to attain an accurate number unless everyone that does carry regularly answers your post. That is just not going to happen and whatever number/% someone comes up with will not be the exact number or even close IMO.

The best thing you can do is count the number of issued permits in the United States and consider that 50% of them carry on a regular basis and you would then have a 50% chance of being correct!

    Using Estimates...

About 18 mil people in FL...
    About .5 mil CCW permits...
About 2-3% of pop has a permit...
Florida was one of the first states to allow CCW...

These figures may vary...don't hold me to them...only did a quick search...

    Eliminate cops and criminals...
    How many really carry?...
How many carry and have training?...

Your answer may be somewhere in these stats...have at it...

Indeed - CCW issue stat's really say little re regular carry.

PA right now is I believe 6.75% - and that's CCW uptake.

As for how many do carry in a dedicated fashion - and here there are not many no-no places - that'd be ''guestimation"

If we have IIRC 12 mil in PA then 810,00 permits are in use. Rather pleasing in theory but - full time carry? I doubt it might be better than 20% - and I am one of those

And really, the number of permits vs. the population doesn't give anywhere near an accurate number. I talk to many people that have permits that don't carry regularly and some that hardly carry at all. I can tell you that in my house it's exactly 50%.

yeah. out of all the people I know with unrestricted CCW permits only maybe 10% say they carry regularly. The rest just own and take guns to the range.

I have seen someplace the state by state figures for permits issued expressed as a percentage of adult population. If I remember correctly the range was something on the order of 1-7% per state (only one or two states above 5%) with most states about 2-3%. Figure no more than 1/2 carry regularly. That would make it somewhere around 1 to 1and 1/2%.

    1% seems a reasonable guess

I have seen similar statistics indicating that maybe 2% of the US population have CCW permits, combining all states together. And if half of them carry regularly, that is 1% of the population carrying. This is only 1 in 100, so the bad guys can still feel pretty safe by assuming that a random victim is not armed.

If you are looking for a nation wide % then .5-1.5% would be a good number.
IMO, the number would be closer to 1.5% in gun friendly states like FL or TX, around .5% in less gun frendly states, and in Anti-Gun states like MD or places like DC or NYC you would find numbers around .005-.01% (most of whom would be LEOs).

Maybe 10% of permits issued. So what does that make? Not many. And even fewer are reasonably well-trained.

Even so, I 'm glad we've got as many as we do.....

    for Colorado...

We'll never know certain facts required to definitely answer the initial question, so I make these assumptions:
    (1) no one carries without a permit (I didn't)
    (2) all permittees carry (I do)
    (3) the permit issue rate is constant.

The entity which collects county-by-county statistics and reports them to the state is the Colorado Sheriffs Association. From its 2004 report, I have 2 precise data:
    (1) 7048 "Concealed Weapon Permit" applications were submitted,
    (2) 6830 CWPs were issued.

The mid-2004 population is estimated to have been 4,653,000, so the 2004 rate was 0.15%.

Colorado overhauled its concealed carry statutes in May of 2003 and became "shall-issue". No renewals possible yet because the CWP expires after 5 years. If assumption #3 is correct for years 2003, 2005, 2006, the rate is now a whopping 0.51%. This equates to a current number of 24,500.

here is the latest data I have on % who carry:

After crunching through the 2000 Census and 2003 Census estimates, the numbers in Chris Bird's Fourth Edition "The Concealed Handgun Manual", some official sources online which are a little more current, and filling in a few gaps from a 1998 CCRKBA report, the winners are:

Percent of Adults with a License to Carry in each Shall Issue State

    7.45% South Dakota
    6.79% Indiana
    6.76% Pennsylvania
    5.23% Connecticut
    5.12% Washington
    4.34% Idaho
    4.10% Utah
    3.86% Oregon
    3.45% Tennessee
    3.15% Alabama
    2.72% Florida
    2.71% Kentucky
    2.67% Wyoming
    2.41% Maine
    2.18% Arkansas
    2.11% Virginia
    1.94% West Virginia
    1.76% Arizona
    1.75% Oklahoma
    1.70% Montana
    1.70% Michigan
    1.62% Texas
    1.39% South Carolina
    1.34% North Dakota
    1.00% North Carolina
    0.86% Mississippi
    0.62% Louisiana
    0.58% Nevada
    0.45% Minnesota
    0.36% Missouri
    0.33% Ohio
    0.20% Colorado
0.17% New Mexico <-- Slight correction 12/22/04, per Ken Grubb

Honorable mentions go to Georgia and New Hampshire. These are "old wave" Shall Issue states--IOW, pre Florida. Because issuance is scattered among many local agencies, no one in either Georgia or New Hampshire is collecting statewide numbers on how many folks are packing. Seems reasonable to place 'em somewhere between the two statistical extremes among the other "old wave" states (South and North Dakota). However, if I were a bettin' man I'd put 'em near the top, and probably above Washington.

Total licensees among the Shall Issue states (excluding Georgia and New
    Hampshire):
    3,079,246

Total population living in True Right To Carry states (Alaska and Vermont):
    1,267,925 (0.44 percent)

Total population living in Shall Issue states:
    185,039,207 (63.75 percent)

Total population living in May Issue states:
    81,350,620 (28.03 percent)

Total population living in No Issue states:
    22,588,641 (7.78 percent)

I guess I do not know what the question was.
% pop that carries or % of permit holders that carry.
