I work with a mild-mannered guy from Africa in his late forties. I told him I was getting a permit and he could not understand why. This guy is ultra left-wing and anti-gun. The other night, he said he watched the news and saw random acts of violence/robberies. He came to work and said he is starting to reconsider his stance on self preservation!

Good , encourage him but remember He has to make the choice of taking responsibility for his own safety , you cant do it for him .
Make sure you get full value out of today , Do something worthwhile, because what you do today will cost you one day off the rest of your life .

Confronted with reality
I notice that in the postings about anti-gunners being converted, the most common theme is facing a threat to their personal safety. Either they become crime victims, or they hear about victimization of someone they know. Prior to that, they lived in a cocoon of ignorance that it couldn't happen to them, or that the police would rush to rescue them.
When confronted with the reality that they must protect themselves personally, or be victimized, they are transformed. There is nothing like having your own life in jeopardy to get your full attention.

Perhaps the single biggest flaw in anti's thinking is overlooking the fact that their safety is their own responsibility.
So many either live in the ''it can never happen to me'' world and/or expect that LE will always save their butt. Which is what Pogo just said of course!
Most have to experience from some angle, a cathartic event that sets the wheels turning, so they begin to realize, it is down to them only.

Some advice: I don't tell anyone I work with about my firearms interests. Some people don't see it in a favorable light.
The fewer people that know I carry, the better.
This is not meant as a criticism - just some friendly advice based on my experience.

A few months back we had an African Refugee intern at my
workplace.
He has a college degree , speaks english perfectly , and is a nice guy.
Unfortunately he was used to the Govt. taking care of him , and really
doesn't understand the nuances of Personal Responsibility as it
relates to self defense.
His world was one where the Bad guys had AKs , the Good Guys had
AKs, and he was in the middle............

I resemble that remark, but a liberal gun owner here.

There's nothing like convert zeal to help in our fight for the RBKA.
From a personal safety POV, it's also better than only packing occasionally.
