Bird Shot ammo for a pistol??

I was told that you can buy bird shot (I presume a miniature shotgun shell) for most major calibers. But I have not come across any....anybody seen something like this. The person told it me it would be great for self defense.....to load the last two (first two rnds to enter the gun) with this bird shot type ammo....

I guess it makes sense....seams less lethal, and im sure in a .45 it could still put someone on their butt....anyone know anything about this type of ammo?

CCI makes something like that, not sure about how performance would be, I'll stick with 230 gr Ball in my .45. Also, if you need to fire your gun, you shouldn't be worried about using less lethal ammo, you should be worried about surviving the attack, here is some of it on cheaperthandirt.

    CCI

Made by CCI in .22lr and Magnum. .38-.357, 9mm, 40S&w .44spl-Mag, and .45acp. They also sell loading components. It is not an effective defense load beyond muzzle contact. It does not cycle autoloaders for the most part.

That load is usually used by hikers to protect against snakes. BUT have you seen taurus' new revolver "the judge" ? the thing will chamber a 3" 410 shell and looks like a beast in their add spot., but then I think the big hole in the target is made by the wad passing through. Still makes you think about it as a car gun.

This has been discussed in several places. Among those that have shot, and those of us that have tended to shootings, the concensus is: BAD IDEA. The rounds are fairly anemic loadings, with extremely small shot, in a plastic cup. Not much energy, beyond a couple of yards.

There aren't many things I will say this about, but if you used these, you would really PO someone, and they will most likely beat you to death for annoying them(unless you plugged it directly in an ear, eye or nostril....but then why would you carry LTL rounds? If the BG is "serious" enough to draw a gun on, he's serious enough to kill. If one is not reconciled to that, one should not carry a pistol.) Handguns are never less-than-lethal, in intent. Don't try to make them do what they can't.

    sportsmanguide has it also
    38/357 works well
    9mm works as single shot
45acp works hard to extract from auto's single shot only
45acp works in revolver alu brass cracks and jams cylinder
causing a manual extraction to be nec before next shot
40s&w rnd looks like 45acp, I expect same performance, haven't tried them yet.
ammo is intended for up close snakes and maybe rats
my experience with snakes is a double tap is nec as often as not

If you pull out a gun and shoot someone COM with it, is your goal to stop them or annoy them?

as far as I know they are good for snakes and rodents.
I wouldn't consider them for defense ammo.

I think it's a bad idea.If things get so serious you have to shoot, shoot to totally disable your attacker.

I have CCI's 38 Spl Shot shell. It is loaded with #9 shot and is effective on rats and snakes at 10'. I would never even think about it as a defensive round, you would be better off carrying a pellet gun. I only carry the shot shells when hunting are kayaking. Even then only the first round in the cylinder is shot the rest are full power .357 rounds.

They Are Fun To Play Around With

They are no good for self~defense applications and are a total waste of a possible necessary first shot capability.

The bird shot barely penetrates 2 sheets of high quality corrugated cardboard at 5 or 6 feet.

It does a fairly good job as a snake shot at the range you would expect to have to shoot one. I used it in a 38 spcl as a fishing gun a lot. It can be completely deadly at point blank range. Will penetrate well if its right up against your assailant. But I would not trust it any further away than that.

+1 for the box o' truth.

These loads are for snakes, not people. It might sting a bit, but it is not going to stop a determined assailant.

You'd be better of beating him with the gun, IMHO, than shooting these shot loads at him.

I do have occation to know that birdshot out of an open bore 12 ga is not a stopper at 45 ft or so . it makes " pimples " under the skin that the nurses take out , hurts a bit for a couple of weeks , but it in no way slows anyone down .
