    A weekend carrying my 1911

I just recently bought my first 1911 - the Ruger SR1911 Commander. It's a sweet gun! I've got 400 rounds thru it already and it's been flawless. I just love the feel of an all metal gun. It harkens back to a long lost era.

Anyway, I was always intimidated by the thought of carrying a 1911 concealed. Everyone says it's hard to do. I love my Ruger so much that I had to give it a shot. This thread is for those who wonder what carrying a 1911 would feel like.

First off this thing is heavy. 37 ounces unloaded. Close to 2.6 pounds loaded. But it's got a nice slim slide and grip. It was surprisingly comfortable to carry all day, although you do feel like your hip had a good workout at the end.

I carried thru the whole weekend with my Galco gun belt and Double Time kydex holster. It hid really well behind a loose t-shirt (1 size up) and shorts. I just had to watch it when I bent at the waist. Even at the extreme 3.30 position (almost 3 o'clock) the handle does print a little. Very similar to my Glock 19 in that regard.

I went around town with the family. Drove for hours, worked on my lawn. Almost everything. It was really really comfortable.

If I had to get used to one thing it would be the weight. Glocks are so much lighter especially my Glock 26.

But there's something cool about walking around CCing a 1911. It felt like a real gun.

    Pics from this weekend:

I made a similar switch, but will start a new thread and not hijack yours.

Good luck with the new Ruger.

Great carry gun! They don't last long on the shelves down here, despite my best efforts to lasso one into my stable. Once you get use to carrying one it will be hard to go back to anything else. Congrats on getting a truly top-shelf 1911 for carry!!!

What kind of belt are you using? Having a good gun belt helps. My Colt is a good 12+ ounces lighter, but a good will always help. That is a fine carry weapon.

There's something about carrying a 1911 that makes you feel like manly.

Normally it's those that haven't really carried a 1911 that make that claim

Oh yeah.....A good dedicated gun belt is a must, especially with a full size carry gun. It really helps with managing the weight.
