Loaded longarms in the car: OK in PA?
Hi everyone, I've been looking around trying to figure out if it is legal for me, being a PA permit holder to keep a loaded longarm in my vehicle. Please forgive me if this is a stupid question, but all I can seem to find are laws relating to hunting. If you do know either way, could you please provide a reference if possible?
Thanks everyone

I'm gonna say no. I don't remember the exact section of the law but no in PA we cannot. That said, if it's a removable box magazine gun, I would think a loaded mag kept seperate would be legal. Do a search for "PA gun laws" I don't remember the actual site address anymore.
Are you thinking about having this for self defense? Just curious.

Transportation in a Vehicle
A handgun being transported in a vehicle without a license to carry must be unloaded and must be carried under one of the exceptions listed above under "Carry."
Rifles and shotguns may be transported in a vehicle as long as they are unloaded.
While transporting a firearm without a license, it is up to the person carrying the firearm to demonstrate that one of the exceptions under "Carry" applies. A law enforcement officer may demand such evidence of an exception.

That sounds about right. QK, do you know if anything says you can't have a loaded magazine elswhere in the vehicle?

I am not aware that a loaded mag is a problem - as a separate entity.
I also am aware that carry permit or no - the law for long arm carry in a vehicle (unloaded) applies regardless. In other words having a CCW does not alter that exclusion.

Not going to discuss the law, but experience wise: Along the border of NJ and around the greater Phila area, I have not seen 1 rifle/shotgun in a rack in a pickup truck. When I go out central / west PA, they are a common occurance.
