florida concealed carry
I'm a resident of Kansas, waiting till 1 Jan for them to send me my paper so I can collect my CCW. I doubt if Ks is gonna take any other state's ccw so therefore, they ain,t gonna take ours. Anyway, driving the interstate the other day, talking to a trucker, he told me to get a Fla. ccw, that it would be good in a lot of other states. told me that i need a pic, prints, money and either a certificate from my training here in ks or they would accept a DD214 since i am retired army. I tried to find something about the 214 thing on fla web site, but can't. Question is this. Will Fla. accept my 214 instead of the certificate or did the truck driver blow smoke up my backside? also, if anyone can link me to where it says this plus a list of all the things i need, it would be greatly appreciated. thanx

They take a lot of different things. I used a hunter training card.
I will look for my book from FL and tell you what they accept.
They need a notarized application, prints, picture, and training. And a money order. I think it is $117.00
Go here. the link at the top takes you to where you can get the forms. http://licgweb.doacs.state.fl.us/weapons/apply.html

Ditto on they took my DD-214 as proof of firearms training and proficiency. However, I highly recommend a CCW course anyway or at least a good amount of self-study with the law, unless you're a LEO. Florida includes a handy document that summarizes the law in the envlope when they mail you your permit, and when I got my CWP years ago I was very surprised at what the law said and what one could and coule not do with a CWP. The nutshell version is "your permit is a license to carry a gun, not a license to use it".
For living in FL, upon the recommendations of some people here I bought and read Jon Gutmacher's book "Florida Firearms Law" several times (I also carry it in my car in case I need to justify something to an LEO-this book is used in a numbre of FL police academies). As I quickly found out once I got the CWP, there's an awful lot to learn about what the law views as self-defense and when it's ok to use a firearm, and the civilian rules weren't much like the rules I was trained on in the service.

Keep in mind also that no matter what Florida law says, even though you're carrying a Florida permit, the laws where you are apply, not Florida statutes. I know, I know, it sounds self-explanatory, but I just had to give that same answer to a co-worker that thought sinc you have a Florida CCW, then Florida laws are what you follow everywhere...
