Here's a reason to carry concealed: The Knockout Game.

I'm currently serving a 90 day sentence ordered by my spouse to be spent in her ancestral bungalow in New York. I can't carry in NY and I feel a bit anxious about that. That is especially true after reading the Syracuse NY paper this morning.

The Knockout Game is apparently quite wide spread and certainly not confined to upstate NY.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knockout_(violent_game)
But it has become prominent enough in bucolic upstate Syracuse to garner a spot on page A5 of The Post Standard. Interesting headlines include having one's eyes knocked out and other fun injuries of a similar sort including death.

'Knockout Game' killing in Syracuse similar to other cases of random violence across country | syracuse.com
Knockout Game victim?s eye kicked out of socket

The sub heading on one of the articles is: "So far one dead, multiple victims beaten in Syracuse"

The simple idea of this game is to select someone at random and then aproach and try to knock him out with a single blow; if that doesn't work, then your gang of friends can stomp and beat the random victim to death.

Gee, in Florida, I would at least be protected by Florida Statute 784.08
    784.08 - - 2012 Florida Statutes - The Florida Senate
Wherein battery of a person over age 65 is a felony of the third degree and assault (of a senior) a misdemeanor of the first degree.

But I think my best protection would be my Glock 36. I wish I was allowed to carry it in NY....

What are some of your reasons to carry?

    'Sorry about your sentence.

I successfully got out of my niece's wedding in NY last year (emergency work situation ).

I'm confident that I won't be back until it is a free state (and will be carrying because I'm a free man).

The irony of law - incapable of stopping gangs from randomly beating decent people to death, but perfectly capable of stopping decent people from protecting themselves from the gangs. I'm not sure how the anti-gun politicians live with themselves; either they're monsters or simply irredeemably stupid.

Anyway, I carry because of stories exactly like these. My wife doesn't understand why I feel the need to have a gun on me all the time. It's because victims of these crimes usually didn't feel that need when they got up that particular morning, and if they had (and their government had any respect for them), they might have gotten home alive and unharmed. I can carry legally, and I feel morally obligated to do so.

That wouldn't protect you from squat, only provide punishment if he is caught. And in most cases, carrying wouldn't prevent it either as it happens so quickly the victim never sees it coming. Only extreme vigilance will prevent it and "protect" you.

I don't see that as a game. It's assault with potentially deadly consequences.

[irony] Wait! Are you saying that criminals aren't disuaded by the certainty of prosecution and the potential penalties attached to their actions? If that's true, how can New York's law limiting magazines to 7 rounds prevent people from loading in 10 more rounds before going on a killing spree? [/irony]

Armed or not, check 6 and don't let people get close enough to assault you.

I carry because the world is a dangerous place full of dangerous animals with men being the most dangerous and of all. The thin veil of civilization, of rule out of law, of safety, is just an illusion, functional at best and better than most when given some semblance of Democracy.

The Knockout crowd will hide behind this veil as cover and use it for ambush. I intend not to hide behind the thin veil, but to drag it along as witness.

I must say i am thankful to have my permit in Maryland . But in Maryland i can only carry while duties connected with Money and to and from work . With this standard the state says they value money over the safety of the person . If they valued the person i would be able to carry 24/7 . The veiws here in Maryland are very twisted and hard to understand.
Crime is off the hook in Balto. City and some counties .

The knockout game is popular in St. Louis, unfortunately the scum only target the elderly or young teens. Some have been caught but witnesses often fail to appear in court.

One suspect who got away with it because his victim decided not to appear at the last minute was shot dead later by a homeowner when he switched to burglary.

In this situation SA is more important than a gun.
Two roads diverged in a wood, and Ió
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

They can call it a "game" if they want. I call it assault with intent to cause severe bodily harm and/or death. Any time your knocked unconscious you have suffered a concussion. Just look at boxers and football players to see what permanent damage a concussion can cause. Unless you surround yourself with a force field to keep people out of striking distance, your susceptible of it happening to you. Your only hope, if it happens, is to survive the first blow and take the vermin out.

As to why I carry. The world is a vicious nasty place. My main goal everyday is to get home in one piece.

To the OP. This nothing new and is not isolated to NY. It is happening all over the country and there have been several deaths from it. IIRC in St Louis there was an older oriental man and his wife walking home. He was struck and killed from it.
