Eighty Hours of Training in Illinois for concealed carry permit. How much is enough?

EDITORIAL: How much concealed carry training is enough?

    Just how much is enough?

An Illinois Senator wants everyone to undergo 80 hours of training before being issued a permit.

Illinois state police have been given 60 days to come up with guidelines for concealed carry classes, which currently consist of 16 hours. But not everyone agrees that the time is sufficient. Illinois State Senator Dan Kotowski, who openly opposes concealed carry, wants to amend legislation to require 80 hours of firearms training to obtain a permit.

    Another quote worth reading...

Concealed carry instructor and Arkansas Carry Board of Directors member, Nicholas Stehle agrees that the two-week training is a bit much and has other, underlying intentions. And while he agrees that training is good, he also doesn’t think that it’s something which should be required.

“No other Constitutional rights require ‘hours of training’ before you’re allowed to exercise your rights,” he said. “For instance, no one requires ‘issue awareness training’ before being allowed to vote,” he explained. “I think the purpose of requiring 80 hours of training isn’t to ensure proficiency with a firearm – it is to discourage people from carrying legally. Chicago isn’t a friendly place to gun owners, and the city continues to attempt to go beyond what even most anti-gun people consider to be reasonable when it comes to regulating the behavior of law-abiding gun owners,” he said.

Eighty hours of training when most other states have 8 or 12. Really? Is it any surprise that the anti gun pro-socialist fools in Chicago want the most stringent requirements in the nation ? Most police training academys don't even require their officers to have 80 hours of firearms training.

This is ridiculous, but really, is anyone surprised?

He wants the average citizen to have 80 hours of training, most police officers don't get that much training in the basic academy. When I went to our academy we only got 40 hours of firearms training. Instructors got 80 hours. How many hours of firearms training do Illinios police get at the academy? I'll bet it aint 80 hours. I'm talking firearms training not firearms law training.

Yeah, and let me guess, classes are probably only going to be held Mon - Fri from 8 to 5 so that working people can't do it because they can't get that much time off of work. It's at least another 80 hours that these people can push concealed carry out farther. I agree with Nicholas Stehle.

The new law in Illinois is already codified. It'll be 16 hours but the ISP does still have some flexibility in defining what will be included in those 16 hours.

Most ccw permit holders I know have not even spent that much time shooting their guns.

This will not stand a court challenge when comparing it to military or Peace Officer training!

The thing that worries me is the idea that this "illinois model" might get a push to be the model instead of the outlier.

We dont even get that much training in the Marine Corps.

1 week of "grass week" (dry fire) from 8-11 and 1-4
and then 5 days of live fire which maybe is about 2-3 hrs a day.

Week 1 is 30 hrs and week 2 is 15 hrs... But we're entrusted with a hell of a lot more than concealed carry

I am in awe at the stupidity of some people. Concealed carry does not mean that I want to play cop. I am not law enforcement and not a superhero. I carry a gun for my and my family's safety. I do not need 80 hours of training to pull a trigger at a bad guy until he is no longer a threat.

They might let people complete the 80 hours on weekends...two hours per weekend, and all required to be consecutive, miss one weekend and you have to start all over...it could work.
