Angry Someone is posting private info of concealed carry holders

I need some advice and if there is anything I can do. Basically, I was just bored and had some free time and decided to google myself and I found out that some hack journalist news site is posting the names and locations of people who applied and received their concealed carry permit here in Iowa.

Linn County Gun Permits Double in January - Government - Marion, IA Patch

I mean A: How is this not illegal, and B: what if someone is genuinely wanting to get a concealed carry permit because their life is in danger due to like an abusive spouse or something and C: How did these guys even obtain this information? I was not told that by applying my private information would be available to the public. I don't even own firearms atm (and I have never shot a handgun before) and am freaking out because what if someone breaks into my place of living and kills me thinking I have firearms here they can sell???

By doing a quick search of the author named "B.A. Morelli" I found out that he works (I believe) for Huffingtonpost. Is there anything I can do to get it removed? Thanks for the help.

Oh yeah, btw I'm new here...so HI GUYS!

If Iowa doesn't have a statute similar to this, it should have.

790.0601 Public records exemption for concealed weapons.—
    (1) Personal identifying information of an individual who has applied for or received a license to carry a concealed weapon or firearm pursuant to s. 790.06 held by the Division of Licensing of the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is confidential and exempt from s. 119.07(1) and s. 24(a), Art. I of the State Constitution. This exemption applies to such information held by the division before, on, or after the effective date of this section.

    (2) Information made confidential and exempt by this section shall be disclosed:
    (a) With the express written consent of the applicant or licensee or his or her legally authorized representative.

    (b) By court order upon a showing of good cause.

    (c) Upon request by a law enforcement agency in connection with the performance of lawful duties, which shall include access to any automated database containing such information maintained by the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

In fact, any of you in states that don't protect CC private information should forward this Florida statute to your law makers and demand something along the same lines.

They are doing it like the Journal News did up in N.Y.(i'm guessing)While it shouldn't be done, unless the law says it's a privacy violation, they can evidently.

I read on the NRA site not long ago,a news paper in Murphy,N.C. was going to do that same thing. The paper is the Cherokee Scout.

Evidently, the one over the paper, knew a lot of the people in the community. When some of the local CCP holders found out about what they were going to do,they started raising you know what with the one over the paper.

He apologized and said they wouldn't print the info.

I would say that if ANYTHING of a random nature happens to anyone whose private information he has published and is harmed in any way you could have attorneys lined up to take the case on contingency in IOWA. I would think you could get a pretty sympathetic jury in that state. The first time a CCW gets hurt I'd take them to court in a class action suit.

It may be considered "public information" unless protected by law, just as your name, address, mortgage, etc. are public info.

I looked at the article you mentioned. Obviously, gun permits are considered public information in Iowa. There is nothing you can do except be extra vigilant. You might try to contact your state representatives to find out if they can help. good luck

Nonsense, if it is publicly available information you can't sue. If it is a public record, then the law has to be changed in that state.

Most of us go through life with little idea of how much private and personal information can now be found with a few
    key clicks.

Private companies often publish everything from the value of your home to the name of the person who sold it to you,
and the date of sale. Public records will provide the home owner's name; more public records will say if he is/was married.
You can quickly find the Marriage Certificate on line and learn the spouse's family name; and lots more.

There are companies selling all manner of "private information" they have gleaned from public sources.
Some companies try to prevent ID theft by asking you a series of questions which they have answers to, as they got them
from public sources. e.g., Which of the following cars did you own? 1999 Ford; 1989 Chevy; 2004 Honda?
Which city did you live in? Waltham MA; Houston TX; San Bernardino; Toronto
In which state were you married? OH; CA; NY; MN
Are you associated with someone who lives in one of these cities: Seattle, Boston, Miami Austin.
In which city was your mother born? San Antonio; Phoenix; Newark; Baton Rouge

If its out there, someone will find it and try to sell it.

    And it goes on.

Even when it is not public information, the info grabbers and distribution companies have it. You gave it to web sites
when you registered warranties. Even medical stuff like which
RX you have purchased, there is a company that keeps a database of that-- how in the H they do this without violating
HIPPA is beyond me, but they do. (I do lots of my pharmacy shopping on line. It is 'hack proof,' yeah sure!

The business community doesn't care about HIPPA. They don't care about ID theft, and they certainly don't care
about the privacy of gun owners if they are enabled to legally obtain, or illegally obtain, lists of CHL holders.

We need a new internet architecture and we need a few public beheadings.

FWIW, according to info on Handgunlaw.us, permit information is PUBLIC.

Need to lobby your legislators to close that hole.

I would use the resources available to the public to find any information about the reporter I could and post it on the internet, probably in as many gun forums as you can, as well as facebook, or anyplace else you have access to.

Find out where he lives from the tax records in the county, the phone number, his family member names and ages. What kind of car he drives, what kind of dog/cat or whatever pet he has.

When he goes to work, when he comes home, what restuarants he eats at, where his parents live. Anything I could find on the guy would become very public.

I am sure he wouldn't appreciate it much, but hey turnabout is fair play. If he wants to out folks because they apply for a permit, then he might want to think twice about getting into private persons business. If you were a public figure that might be one thing, but not as a private citizen. I would make his life hell.

And as long as it is all gotten from public sources, there isn't a darn thing he can do about it.
Just remember that shot placement is much more important with what you carry than how big a bang you get with each trigger pull.

well if it ever becomes public information in Florida (have no idea if it is) I will then place this bumper sticker on my Toyota:

For Public Record: Zonker 1986, Florida Concealed Weapons License #XYZ123, Carry Weapons Glock 19 and Glock 26
If you would like to see them in person, simply give me a valid legal reason to do so. I love Show & Tell.

If you can't undo what this libturd idiot has done to you and others then I say fight fire with fire. Google his name and address and spot him as a gun free zone for the BG's that can read.
