Traveling from Iowa to Michigan ?

Am I right on this? According to handgunslaws.us, I can now carry through Illinois, and also Indiana and Michigan. I can't find anywhere that says anything about needing an FOID card for Illinois.

I would not try to carry in Illinois. Their new law is not all that clear and I have not read anywhere that they honor carry permits from any other state. Either drive out of your way to avoid IL like we always did when we went to gun school each year in Missouri, OR stop just before the IL border and take your gun off, unload it, lock it in the trunk and lock your ammo in a different place.

Go to Wisconsin, and ferry across Lake Michigan!

Something you've probably never done before, avoids FOIDs!

Or, you can try out the new law inIL, and write us from prison!

    Probably never done that, either!

If you travel thru IL, do not leave the car with your gun on, nor leave the gun in the car, unless all people in the car have PCW.

Whatever you do good luck and have fun!

Yeah, I got tapatalk, too. So what?

Yeah, I would not try driving through here armed just yet. One of these days you will be able to, but since they aren't even issuing licenses to residents yet I'm guessing they do not want "outsiders" driving through with guns on their hips.

Thanks. I'll check the map and see if i can go around Illinois. We are ending up at Mackinac Island in Michigan. Going to park the van in Mackinaw Michigan. Only the Wife and I are going and we both have Iowa permits. Kids are staying with my mom.

Yeah, you could probably drive around the top of Wisconsin or, like was mentioned above, take the ferry across the lake. I've never been on it but my wife has and she thought it was a neat experience. We're actually leaving for Michigan tomorrow! Have fun on your trip without the kids!

Driving around the top through Especially US 2 (2 lane road) isn't on my to do list again. The ferry is nice I have heard. Enjoy the Island.

That ferry is expensive. We are driving all night so hwy 2 might not be too bad. Was just looking at the map and thought that might be the way to go.

Doesn't matter IF they "want it" or not- the law is clear IF you have a permit from your state you may now legally drive through the state but IF you stop you must not get out of your vehicle while armed- lock it in and be done with it- since it has been all over the news (National and Regional - including Ky & TN, MO) there is no excuse for any LEO not knowing the laws. I'm "guessing" they may not be thrilled but there is nothing they can do about it either

IF anyone IS really concerned they can print out the new law I posted from Handgunlaw and have it for the LEO "just in case" though I'm seriously in doubt they are not well aware- don't expect IL needs more law suits filed in the financial situation they're now in

I'm a Michigan resident in Chicago now on business. I made the (very) difficult to decision to leave my weapon at home. Hate it.

    ^^^^Here is a link to another route^^^^^^^^

    https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en

From Des Moines to Mackinaw City via Wisconsin and the UP ( I don't know where you are in Iowa exactly) to Mackinaw City, VS. through Northern Il. and the Lower Peninsula and its within a few minutes of the N. Il. route. You can vary it I'm sure, once you get under way, Google may have routed a few county roads which may need to be averted.

here is the link to the N. Ill. route which shows its only 15 min. faster.

    https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en

I of course have no aversion to driving route 2 in the UP, as I am a truck driver and have known the UP, Mi. Ill. Wi. Oh. Pa.
Md. Ky. Ny. In. Tn. Ga. Fl. for 30 years, as well as many other roads.

I can and have taken 18 wheelers down billy goat passes.
