    It never fails...

I'm staying in a very unfriendly 2nd Amendment state. For only the second time in my life, I walked in and out of a hotel I had a reservation for. My spidey senses went up my neck as i observed the "guests" milling about, shirts off, leaning over the railings. As they checked me out, all I could think of was, "Aznav! He's what's for dinner!"

And, of course, my carry permit is no good in this state. I will say that I took another room a half mile away and my HK is right beside me with my Streamlight taclight hanging off it.

It never fails that EVERY city where I stay and get those same spidey senses is a no-carry city. As in another thread i started earlier, it boggles the mind the logic that politicians come up with as why more laws and "less" guns makes for a safer city.

You did right by following your instincts and left. I've done the same thing when on the road. I'll get a premonition that something bad is going to happen, and I'll get back in my car and move on.

I feel safer with my Sig, but why tempt fate.

Better to just move on down the road.

Well, it will take awhile to read it but, the authors already have my attention...

There is a compound assertion that (a) guns are uniquely available in the United
States compared with other modern developed nations, which is
why (b) the United States has by far the highest murder rate.
Though these assertions have been endlessly repeated, statement
    (b) is, in fact, false and statement (a) is substantially so.

If you can't carry, at least be situationally-aware. Good job.

That's a tough situation -- glad you've got a good mind-set. There have been many times when I've been glad my S&W .357 was tucked inside my waistband.

Reminds me of a hotel I stayed at once in Charlotte, NC. I was in town for the Steelers/Panther's game. Later that night after the game, I had to run out to the car for something and a guy stole a car right in front of me. Needless to say, this Thursday when I head back to Charlotte for this year's Steelers/Panther's game, I won't be staying at that same hotel.

My biggest fear is bed bugs lol. Ive educated myself well on how to check for them at motels etc. Sign of a bed bug will send me packing to another town faster then 14 BGs lurking outside LOL. So far have traveled a lot and not carried the little buggers home.

Yup, I actually got bit by bed bugs once i stayed at this cheap motel a few years back. Went to bed and was itching all night, woke up with bite marks all over my body. Didn't realize what it was until a few days later when someone made a comment. Pretty much the price you pay if you want to save a few bucks. After that incident i did some research and learned about bed bugs inspections, to make sure i wouldn't get anymore more bites again. I know there are a lot worse things than bed bugs, like getting your car stolen in front of a hotel, but bed bugs are my biggest fear by a mile.

Check these out, not sure how accurate they are and infestation can happen overnight, and can happen in "nice" hotels as easily as fleabags. I still check before i book and inspect before bringing my luggage in. Dang it, now you made me itch.

My big fear of the dreaded bed bug isnt the bite at the motel. They are expert hitch hikers and staying where they are will likelly bring some home with you to infest your own home.

Which wouldnt be so horrible except for the fact that since DDT was banned there is no insecticide that will kill them or the eggs. It takes 2000 dollar or so visit by an outfit to heat your house to 365 degrees or there abouts at which point the adults young and eggs die instantly.

University settings are the worst for them and motels and hotels around them are most likely to have bed bugs.
It really has nothing to do with being dirty or clean. Before DDT was invented the bugs were a way of life for everyone, after they were almost extinct, the the gooberment banned ddt and they came back with a vengeance.

Knife, flashlight, kubotan, "cane," spray, avoiding being out solo, elevated awareness (as always), no clear indication of being a "tourista," ...

Like you, though, if feeling scoped out by the "guests" or folks hanging around, I often head elsewhere as well.
