Ever Had That "Glad I was carrying but nothing hapened" Feeling?

Arlington, VA 9 pm - 4 am last night.

Renovations at a California Pizza Kitchen location in Pentagon Centre Mall.

Restaurant is located on the outside of the mall next door to a Starbucks. Very ethnically diverse location. Myself and the GC are the only hopelessly white guys in the place except for the two alternative lifestylers who come in just before closing and order a bottle of wine and a pizza.

The outside tables (4) at Starbucks are all taken with 5-7 middle eastern men drinking coffee. They are still there two hours after Starbucks closes for the night.

Parking is on the street past the Starbucks. Multiple trips back and forth to the truck bringing tools in and out.

Plenty of other people of various ethnicities walking the sidewalks up until about 1 am.

I've worked in DC and it's surrounds plenty and have never felt "stranger" than I did last night. The front patio of Starbucks looked like it could have been downtown Islamabad.

No issues, but this was the first time that I was really glad that I was carrying. Maybe it's me, but it seemed strange being literally 4 blocks from the Pentagon and feeling like I was in another country.

Not lately, last time I had a feeling like that I was half way the world at Uncle Sam’s expense back in 1969-70.

I of course wasn't there but based on your description, I wouldn't of been concerned.

I've had a few "glad I was carrying, but nothing happened" feelings.. One night I walked over to a friend's house who lived three blocks away from me for a MNF Steelers game. I ended up staying until around 1:30AM and on the walk home I passed by a group of 6 guys walking in the opposite direction. None of them said anything and neither did I, but they were staring me down and I didn't break eye contact. After they passed by me, one of them said "Oh, you think you're hard?? How 'bout we show you what's up?". I looked back but didn't say anything and kept walking and luckily, for whatever reason, they just kept walking and didn't turn around to "show me what's up". The Glock 32 I had IWB sure felt comfy then.

To OP - as for your situation, you have to call it as you see it.

As for me and the question of the thread.......... several times in a couple of different states where I carry. Mostly late night fuel stops when you know you are being sized up as a Tango by the idiots who roam the world.

And you know your perception is correct when your wife calmly asks you... "you are carrying, right?"

A few times not many. One particular was about a month ago. Getting gas for the bike and a carload of what I knew to be pill and methheads pulled into the lot and got out.

Id pulled my bike away from the pumps and was smoking at the corner of the building just sort of leaning on the bike.
5 of em 19 to 22 yrs of age. They did the normal smarting off to some older folks that walked past them and a few lone young guys. I watched them do what im pretty sure were a couple of deals.
They would look over at me and stare but nothing else. Couple headed my way once but when the got about 20 feet off I just shook my head no and they turned around went back to their buddies pointed my way and talked a little bit then a few minutes later they got in their car and left.

I finished my break went in got a coke to put in the saddle bag. Nothing happened, they never spoke to me, and didnt come back. At least not for the next twenty minutes when my friend I was waiting on showed up and we left.

But I know who they are and what they come to that lot to do which is harass people and sell drugs, and with that many in a group I was sort of glad I was carryin.

I'd have been glad too, Ghost. In my experiences, it seems that the meth-heads are the most unpredictable of addicts.

I completely agree. I deal with many of them. Its amazing the "coincidence" of meth use and mental illness.

Yeah they arent the brightest bulbs in the lamp. Meth is easy to get in that town. Every kid over 15 knows how to cook it and ton are. So you really dont have desperately tweeking idiots running around with no self preservation instincts left.

I dont look like your normal everyday citizen anyway. Even though Ive never stole a candy bar in my life they probably believe its a toss up of who will rob who LOL. And the fact that they see me and 5 to 15 others riding through town fairly regularly in a pack with the same patch on our backs might give me a little buffer with themwhen im alone too.

Its just a kids charity group and the patch says so but i dont think they can read LOL

Lol, I know what you mean. I'm big and tattoo'd. I tend to get followed around when I enter stores, people cross the streets, lock their car doors and clutch their purses.. just about everything Obama recalled himself experiencing. +1 on the club and great work you guys probably do! Ride safe, brother.

I guess now you know how black people feel in South Dakota! Luckily for me brown people don't freak me out.

Hard to equate that with "Islamabad," in an ethnically-diverse, active night-life type place. Seems to me it's an ordinary sort of sight. Realize that around the world there are many places that have night life, despite it not being that fashionable in the USA. Sitting quietly with a couple friends at an outdoor bistro/cafe seating area doesn't concern me anymore than seeing a couple strolling down the street. But that's just me. I try not to feel "hopelessly white" in such circumstances, or ever. It's just not worth it to me.

Now, had the folks sitting there at 4am been trundling tools to the front door and acting furtive in clear ways, that'd be something different. Those would be indicators. But, to my way of thinking, having "coloring" like a "Middle Eastern" type person and sitting with a couple buddies at an outdoor table, even at 4am, doesn't itself equate to threat. Not unless there are other circumstances or indicators. I wouldn't view such a scene any more risky than had there been a handful of couples or singles at those tables at that time.

Yes, I have felt that way more than a few times. Conversely, I've never had a Sorry-I-Was-Carrying feeling.
