Concealed rifle or shotgun in NC

I live in NC and have my CCW permit. I carry daily but when we go to the NC mountains I would like to take a rifle or shotgun with me.

Does anyone know the laws regarding a concealed rifle or shotgun?

Concealed rifle or shotgun in NC

First off, how exactly do you plan on concealing a rifle or shotgun???

Guys hiking in trench coats tend to draw attention ;)

Handgunlaw.us has the gun laws for NC spelled out. I would start there.

Check Here for a 'binding' legal opinion. Its what you pay them for.
    http://www.ncdoj.gov/getdoc/32344299...-gun-Laws.aspx

Any other source is at your own peril. Also, you can have them answer your question with a recently dated Email, which is also a 'Legally Binding Document'.
There is also the Federal Standard Method which is legal in all 50 States, if you don't need access to it in any hurry.

There are NO other weapons that are allowed to be concealed in NC other than handguns.

The permit is labeled Concealed Handgun Permit and they mean just that a long gun concealed within using distance will get you an all expense paid vacation.

Here is a link to the exact statute 14-269

most jurisdictions consider that transporting a firearm and not carrying. so "concealment" is the norm since it will be unloaded and cased in some manner.

If you have a long gun that is within immediate access to any occupant of a vehicle you can (and most likely will) be charged under the statute I quoted above if stopped by LEO. It can not be in easy access of any occupant of the vehicle. If you want to be safe it should be transported in a preferably locked container and not within reach.

This should have been thoroughly covered in your CHP class.

If you have a trunk, put it there. If you can have it openly on the front passenger seat area, that will work too. Open is not concealed. If you have a truck, behind the seat is a bit more tricky. I usually case it if it goes there. No way in my little truck can I easily access a cased gun behind my seat, even with the extra space they call seating. If you can lock the case even better. If I have it in my van I keep it cased and unloaded in the very back.

Put it in a case unloaded and don't worry about it. A soft case will work. I do it all the time.

In general I agree with NC Bullseye. However, It is my understanding that a gun on the seat in the open is not concealed. If you through your coat on top of it that is a different story. If my memory is correct this was stated in our CHP class.

The OP was very specific in his first and subsequent posts that he was referring to concealed. That's the reason I didn't go into the open carry aspects.
