I bought a S&W 642 as a bug. In reality it's my EDC, always with me everywhere. When occasion allows my BUG is a bobtailed commander length 1911. Carrying them together is comforting.

Until I get another one that is of some kind.

I don't always carry a BUG but when I do it is a Glock 36.

I actually think of it less as a back up than as a "secondary" option.

Too big you say? Well, I think the micro .380's are too small and I have never been a revolver guy.

Never felt the need for a BUG.....YET. If I did though it would be a Taurus model 85 or a Kahr CW9.

I always carry a back up. A S&W 442 or LCR357 in the off hand front pocket.

I carry a secondary weapon in the winter and sometimes in warmer weather. It's just easier to access my LCR in my pocket than anything on my belt.

I did when I carried professionally, but not as a civilian. Usually a G26 or G27.
I do however, keep a long gun in vehicle. Probably unnecessary, but at this point I'd feel lost without it.

My BUG is a S&W shield 9mm. I always carry that, home, away etc. When away from home it is augmented by a Glock, my 629 or 1911 depending on my mood at the time. I have been in a few situations where I was REALLY glad I had a BUG. I have had enough guns break, the last thing I want to happen it to have to shoot someone and my gun break or run out of ammo before it is over.

I am a big guy so I do not feel a couple extra pounds carried correctly.

My primary carry gun is a government size 1911 and a spare magazine on my belt. My BUG is either a Sig P938 9mm or a Springfield Armory XDs-45 in a pocket holster in my jeans pocket with a spare magazine in the watch/change pocket above it.

    A snubbie (442 or KLCR) or a P3AT.

When I carry a second gun, it's a second gun, not a backup. Either one can be used first, either one becomes the New York Reload as required by the situation. The second gun is another Glock in 9mm, so it uses the same magazine and operates the same way all around. No transition to new trigger, new grip, new caliber. I train to run from either side, so that's not a problem either.

Some days I have my derringer in pocket as a weak side option.

I also have a weak side carry holster for my P-64 so that I can carry 2 of my real carry guns at once. But I normally don't do that.

For the most part, I tend to go with extra magazines over extra guns. I feel better with 2 extra mags in a pocket rather than a backup gun in that pocket.
