some do...some don't...there have been a couple threads if I recall correctly

pro: every bit of capacity counts

con: if I can't get it done in 15 shots what's to say that 1 more will help

a couple people had an interesting idea of the following...say you have a magazine that holds 15 rounds...you have the following set up
16 in gun (full topped off mag, one in chamber)
two magazines on belt, one with 15 and one with 14 (space for the extra round if you have to unload)

myself? ...I always top off for the same reason that I have the gun...I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it

Yes every time. Without topping off you are not fully loaded. I also carry extra mags.

Absolutely every time. Not doing so would be like withdrawing $1000 from the bank but tossing $100 on the floor as I left. Wouldn't do it with cash. Certainly, wouldn't think of it with a life.

I feel much more prepared with 27 rounds on me than merely 26.

Don't want to have to remember too much in a stress situation.

7+1 in the gun, with 2 spare 8 round mags.

    Shoot 8 - reload.
    Shoot 8 - reload.
Shoot 8 - while running away.

Yep 10+1 with extra mag. 21 rounds total.

Years ago when I first started practicing shooting under stress (simulated tactical scenarios), I tried to count my shots so I’d know when I needed to reload. I found out an interesting thing, it didn’t work.

When you’re in a stressful situation, you have so much “important stuff” to process in a short time that “more trivial stuff” like counting how many shots you’ve fired tends to go out the window.

So, how do you know when you need to reload? You shoot enough to become one with your gun, and you feel it. You get so you can feel when the slide locks back, and you reload. However, if you get any opportunity at all, do a tack-load to try to keep your gun from running dry in the first place.

Oh, and yes I top off my magazine after chambering a round. Why would I intentionally put myself at a one-round disadvantage?

I top off to 10+1. I want as much in the gun as possible when the fight starts. More rounds in gun means more time shooting less time reloading. I can't bring to mind a single negative of topping off, except in my case I wish they made 21rd boxes of 45acp. Two G30 mags plus the chamber. I had to steal a FMJ for the pipe until I can buy some more ammo.

I carry a revolver 99% of the time, when I do carry an auto I top off the mag.

P.S. The revlover is always loaded to max capacity
