    Gun confiscation underway in Indonesia

Here is a reminder of what can happen. First there is registration, then confiscation. The Indonesian government has decided that private ownership of guns cannot be allowed, and the police are knocking on doors to steal private property. Here is a choice quote from the article:

The National Police said Wednesday they have seized at least 4,759 out of 17,516 registered firearms they plan to take away from civilians to keep them from being used in criminal acts.

National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Sisno Adiwinoto argued many owners of the private guns had misused them.

Others failed to renew their ownership permits properly, he added.

Aceh police raid beauty parlor; men arrested for receiving haircuts from women

BANDA ACEH, Aceh province (AP): Enforcing Islamic law, Indonesian police raided a dozen beauty parlors and arrested 13 beauticians for failing to wear Islamic attire and two male customers for having their hair cut by women, police said Thursday.

Police chief Bahagia Hadi said raids on beauty parlors would be intensified in the Indonesian province of Aceh because such places were often found to be used for prostitution.

Bahagia said police found used condoms during a raid Wednesdayin one of the parlors in the capital of the tsunami-ravaged province, Banda Aceh.

The 13 female parlor workers were arrested because they woretight shirts and jeans but no head scarves, while the two men should have known that Islamic Sharia law states they can only receive haircuts from male hairdressers, he said.

All were released after being admonished by the Sharia Agency,he said.

Aceh implemented a version of Sharia law in 2001 under aspecial autonomy package offered by the government to defuse years of sectarian conflict in Indonesia's northwestern-most province.

Not that this story isn't bad enough, but they went from tighter restrictions/registration (1999) to confiscations in under 10 years.

I fear this is not a good sign for Indonesia's citizens, if history shows us anything...
