Why is there no "best self-defense" round?

Sometimes, I think that I am cursed in that my life and career have taken a more scientific route than artistic. I think a lot of decisions would be easier without a long thought process.

The weapons and ammo industries are soooooo consumer driven. New guns and new calibers hit the market with regularity. It's like buying a new wardrobe for the year. We must "keep up with the Jones'". The hardest thing for me to get a grip on is the on-going list of verbage and comments made on forums like this one; shoot the gun that is best for you, shoot what you are most accurate with, shoot the largest caliber you can control, shoot high capacity small/fast, low capacity large/slow, ad naseum.

It amazes me, that with such an intelligent population as we have on this forum sight, we can not agree on this subject. Am I to believe that gun ownership and weapons/caliber selection should follow the thought pattern as buying a car? I like red convertibles, you like blue SUV's. Both are automobiles and get us where we want to go. Some drive fast, some drive slow.

Best self-defense should be available. It's our lives and the lives of our families we are defending. I have been fortunate to have many weapons to choose from. That does make for fun shooting, but each time I change weapons, the thought enters my mind, is this the best one for our defense?

The reality of life is we are more likely to be struck by a lightening bolt than need our weapon to defend ourselves, but no one practices dodging lightening.

The BEST Self Defense round, whether a 22LR to a 50 AE, is the one you have access to when the event happens! I'm better with my LCP back up then with a pocket full of rocks! However to answer your question, we are all individuals and we all have different skills and physical abilities! I can shoot a 10mm well, but I shoot my .357 Sig better! She Who Must Be Obeyed in my household can shoot her PK380 very well, but she likes the 22 win mag LCR and shoots it better! C'est La Vie!

The best one is the one that is your hand when you need it. Heck, if a rock is all you have then use that. I chose a service size gun using a 9mm round for a whole bunch of reasons. I am sure there is someone in the forum that uses a pocket gun in 45 for a whole bunch of reason as well and if he/she and I were in a room we would argue why each of our reasons are better than the other persons. I personally do not like small guns in any caliber. I chose 9mm because of round cost, mag capacity, and I could do follow ups the quickest. Now the capacity issue is almost mute since there are several hand guns of 40 and 45 that almost match 9mm for capacity. I also chose to carry every day and in my home, so my EDC handgun is also my home defense gun. That way I could be more efficient with my practicing. Every person here will agree and disagree based on their own preferences.

So the great caliber debate rears it's ugly head again? Sigh....

I agree it is whatever you have at the time. Training and proficiency with a weapon and round can make you deadly with it. Stick with what you are comfortable and good with. Number one is shot placement.

The best gun is the one I carry and the best round is what said gun is loaded with.

The best one is the one that instantly destroys the bad guy, but most people shy away from carrying nuclear weapons.
I carry a gun, because a Cop is too heavy.

You can go crazy with looking at ballistics test but I stick to what feeds and fires reliably and does good in the ballistics tests I've seen. There are a ton of good rounds out there. There is no perfect round because there is no perfect situation or design.

... My reality is that I had better look out for lightening strikes, if they are as you say. Sorry, the need for a weapon, IMO, is much greater than you seem to think.

Will you need a gun most days? Probably not. But when you do, and there will be a "when", not an "if"...

I truly understand where you are coming from. With a law enforcement career that spanned the revolver's reign through the "wonder nines" and beyond, I have been priviledged to see many advents in firearms. After all these years I have come to the belief that all self-defense is about ones self. From what you look for in the features of a handgun to the the caliber and load you use. The diverse selection we have in arms, particularly handguns, shows that one size does not fit all. Of the old time lawmen that trained me, all sworn by sixguns, and big, heavy bullets were the order of EVERY day. Later on the norm became "polymer-perp-poppers" in the form of Glock and HK. I can truly say that I would still kick in a door with any of those old school cops armed with six-shooters even in today's world. The reason being this.....they were very proficient with what they carried and were committed to using them with no reservations if the need arose. So, if I would rather have someone who is proficient and committed in the use of their chosen sidearm to go into harms way with, why would I not want the same things for myself? So today I stick with what I am comfortable with in operation, can operate at a high level of proficiency, and has the ability to perform the task at hand. Fad and fashion play no part in this selection. The committment aspect is something I resolved long ago when I entered into my chosen professions. So I guess my bases are covered.....

Why is there no "best self-defense" round?
Two reasons: (1) Because as science and technology advances the "best self defense round" changes. By the time something comes to market, there is something being tested that is probably better. The Model A Ford was at one time the best available car on the market. (2) If you ask more than one person any given question, on any given topic, regardless of the available data, you will get more than one opinion. But if you limit your question to a single trusted source, who has reviewed the available data, is knowledgeable on the subject and is not easily swayed by marketing claims or internet forum popularity; you will find that there is indeed a best self defense round for that person.

Best self defense round? It's the one that stops everybody with one shot but is small enough to carry twenty in a magazine. It penetrates any barrier between you and the bad guy but never over penetrates and endangers an innocent. It's so high tech as to be undefeatable but it's rock solid old favorite your completely familiar with. It's made of the highest quality material to the most exacting standards but it's also low cost plinking ammo. The world requires compromise you choose where.

I'm a .40 S&W fan for reason beat to death on this forum, and a .357 mag fan. But, a .380 ACP to the vital is 10x more deadly than a .357, .40, .45 to the leg.

There was a ex gang banger on one of those scared straight shows that had a .45 mag emptied into his gut. 6 .45 rounds all into his gut, nasty looking scars and stuff but he lived. Had that same low life had a .380 to his heart or other vital he most likely would be dead.
