Thumbs down Stupid incident of the day

Okay……….. Stupid incident of the day. My son works in a Pawn Shop and all of us have probably gone into one at one time or another, usually everyone behind the counters carry a sidearm of some kind. Well the PS that he works in is no exception. I’m pretty sure that they all carry Kahr 9mm. But I got a call about 8pm last night, it was my son saying that he might see us later than normal cause his boss just shot himself in the leg! I asked him what happened and he said, that his boss was clearing his pistol (closing shop for the night) and the pistol jammed and accidentally fired. ! WOAW the horse up! Got another call a few hours later saying that the boss was okay with the exception of the hole in his leg, the hollow point did a thru and thru and had just a few fragments left in his leg…. And he has to spend the night in the hospital.

    A few observations:

1- There isn’t any such thing as an ACCIDENT! Careless handling and complacancy are always to blame.
2- If he was clearing his pistol at the end of the night then it means he doesn’t carry on a normal basis and probably hasn’t had any formal pistol safety training. Open carry in Virginia does not require any formal safety training.
3- ALWAYS know your target. I really doubt that he wanted to shoot himself in the leg.
4- Even though I’ve already trained my son in firearm safety, and we go shooting on a regular basis, this weekend he is going to get a REFRESHER with live rounds and today when I see him he will get a refresher with a unloaded pistol.
5- And I’ll bet you a months pay that by the end of the day today, I will ensure that there is a safety barrel in the store for clearing their pistols.

    Have a great day Everyone!

Alex, I believe Brian was making an observation on the story. If the owner had followed Rule 1. He would not have shot himself or anyone else.

Well since #1 is don't point it at anything you don't intend to shoot, and one of the others is keep your mitts off the trigger until you intent to shoot...

Whichever rule # we ascribe - the ''don't point'' is IMO the real safety net ............ and is so often ignored with results we see too much.

If he, the boss, had practiced and trained with snap caps toward clearing a weapon that has been jammed/misfed...he'd have known what to do and how to clear it and to not point the barrel at areas which commonly are insured.

    Training FTW.

I always thought Rule #1 is 'Have a gun."

    Good observations, Flip.

I think you hit that nail on the head. Sounds like the guy got off lucky only shooting himself. Clearing barrel be damned, I would encourage my boy to get out of there yesterday if it were me. No pawn shop job is worth getting shot.

Frankly, I think we should all be saying: There, but for the Grace of God, go I.

Yeah, we're all safe. And yesterday, that boss probably would have come on the board and said the same things everyone else is saying. Fact is, lots of very experienced people shoot themselves. Maybe it should simply serve as a reminder tonight when you are clearing your firearm.

All of these stories represent negligence...but negligence by people that may be as or more experienced than the average poster here.

Sorry for the rant...I do not wish to offend anyone.

So how close was your son when the shot went off? Love to hear about his initial reaction!
