pulled over last night, strange action on officers part,

so i was leaving a friends house and noticed a headlight was out, sure enough as soon as i hit the highway a Sheriffs deputy lights me up, i pull over, roll the window down, turn the dome light on, hands on the wheel, the whole nine yards, he approaches the car and asks for my DL, i hand it to him with my CCW and he asked where it was, it was on the passenger seat next to me in a "notebook" holster, he requested i hand it to him and i did, he then sets it on top of my car and walks back to his cruiser and comes back with two warnings, expired tag and the headlight. he was super nice and thanked me for informing him about the CCW. I thought it was odd the he just set my pistol on my roof and left it there out in the open while he was doing his thing back at his car.

The officer, deputy whatever proceeded as he/she felt safe to conduct the traffic stop. Not everyone does the same in any given situation. Even officers from the same dept may not proceed the same way.

Not clear whether you handed him a holstered or unholstered gun.

That's what I thought. Seems like putting it on the top of the car was a relatively safe way to go about the stop. He was able to keep you and the weapon in view throughout the stop. Worst case would be that you drove off with it still on top.

To me the officer involved removed the weapon from your reach without makeing an issue of it or strictly speaking taking it into custody . Not necessarly what i would do but a good compromise anyway . Glad it all worked out for you in any event.

I guess he felt better leaving it on the roof where he could see it. Maybe he didn't want to take it into his possession for fear of any accusations.

I stated in the other thread I do not disarm leagally armed citizens. Unless ofcourse the individual gave me reason to believe that he would cause me harm.

Well at least you got off with just warnings.

    Two things I don't like.

First, I don't ever want to touch a weapon with a LEO present. Just seems like a bad idea, and an easy way for people to get confused.

Second, I would hate to forget about the gun and drive off with it on the roof. You said that almost happened, so it sounds as if the deputy forgot about it as well. I would much rather him take the weapon back to the car with him than to leave it on top of the car.

Nah.. I don't see it this way. If they request something specific, and I respond accordingly.. I have no problem with it. They know what they're asking for and what to expect.

Sounds like it went smooth. The cop sounds like a decent guy. It would be nice if all cops have this kind of attitude. I've yet to be stoped.
