Ranger: "I don't know but 14 years ago someone hit the bell with a mallet"

Of course our national monuments need to be protected but this was going above and beyond what I'd expect as reasonable. Chicago's new library may need to relax on this if any of the locals could visit (legally or not).

Philly might as well be in NJ, but that aside, those are federal buildings, and federal law prohibits carry inside.

So mallets are illegal near the Liberty Bell, too?

That's ridiculous. Mallets don't ring bells. People ring bells.

Sad, isn't it, when the citizens are criminalized for daring to set foot (armed) in a place devoted to ostensibly upholding the Constitution's principles and educating the people about its importance.

On September 16, 1988, President Ronald Reagan signed the Constitution Heritage Act of 1988 which established the National Constitution Center. The act called for a national center “within or in close proximity to the Independence National Historical Park” that “shall disseminate information about the United States Constitution on a nonpartisan basis in order to increase awareness and understanding of the Constitution among the American people.”
