    Texas Castle Doctrine

Yesterday the House Committee on Criminal Jurisprudence voted to pass HB 284, the Castle Doctrine/Stand Your Ground bill. The vote was 5-3 in favor of sending it to the full House with a recommendation that it be passed. It was also reported in the committee that 105 out of 150 Representatives were now signed on as sponsors or co-authors. The bill is to be placed on the House calendar for consideration.

Looks like there's also strong support in the Senate. We have high hopes that it will be adopted and take effect in September.
    Cheers,
    Rod

That's great! Hope the state senate agrees. Now, if only Nevada would do the same....

That's great news. I have been contacting my rep's to try and get the same thing done here in NC. Also trying to get the law about not being able to carry in a restaraunt that serves booze. Grass Roots of NC is a big part of trying to get this through as well. So all you NCers out there, do your part so we can post this same post for NC.

Great! I'm glad Alabama already passed ours. I hope many more (if not all) States follow suit.

Amazing that they didn't have it already since I assumed that Texans feel that TEXAS itself is their castle!

    Good News...

We'll keep hoping for a positive outcome...write to those legislators!

I hope you realize, that if this passes, you will be putting a lot of 'low-life' attorneys out of work...

    IANAL

As I understand it, we (Texans) enjoyed most of the benefits of the Castle Doctrine established by years of case law. There was however, no actual law on the books that specifically stated that we didn't have to retreat.

Also, we are hopeful that there will be a defense to civil liability suits included in this bill. ( I hope I said that right.... basically if passed, a person that is not charged with a criminal offense in a shooting will be protected from civil suits)

    Please remember that IANAL...
