    What do you say when...

What do you say when someone asks what you need a gun for?

I've been known to ask why they feel they don't need one. Then when they say that they've never had the need for one before, I ask them if they've ever had a house burn down. Then I ask them why they bother having smoke detectors.

This usually provokes thought in most except the die-hard guns are evil types.

I've had someone ask me "why do you carry a gun?", to which I reply; "'cause you don't!"

My favorite is one from this site I can't remember who I'm stealing this from.

    "Because I can't carry a cop"

The insurance, spare tire, smoke detector anology works pretty well

I've seen one that says "cause I can't throw rocks at 1300 feet per second."

Thats exactly what I say. I have no obligation to explain myself to anyone.

Its funny the people who tend to ask this question think society is so dangerous because of the presence of too many firearms, also think that the same society is so safe that no regular person ever has a need to carry a gun. There's just no point to argue with such insanity.

I actually had a local LEO here ask me the same thing a few days back. I answered "no reason" and left it at that. I figure its like the old Harley MC quote "If I have to explain, you won't understand".

I say that shooting is a hobby, which in a way it is. But then decide to carry because its another perk of owning a gun.

And if they're still bugging, I just "Because my bullet is faster than a police car".

    Idea for a new one,

    Bad people don't make appoitments.
I guess a new version of an old saying.

I like to use "steal" from some one one the boards by-line...
"When seconds count the police are just minutes away"

I really like to point out that 99.999% of the time the police will be there to take your statement or that of witnesses. On the other hand unless the stars are in alignment and you've got 1 wish left in the genie bottle you're on your own at the moment of contact. I admire and respect the police, but I don't count on them to be at my back 24/7.
My wife of 37 years asked me that in the 35 years since my Vietnam days, I hadn't needed a gun what makes me want one now? My reply, "The world is getting meaner, and less friendly all the time" and I'm not getting any younger." We could go our whole life and never have to reach for a weapon, but all it takes is one time, just one time and in seconds your life can end. If your not prepared about all anyone can do is dial 911 so the CSI can do their job and the coroner do theirs. You on the other hand have been reduced to a statistic in a casket.
