    Houston Metro Bus carrying...

Okay, hate to waste y'all time but I just need to vent. My mother is a bus driver for the Houston Metro service. She knows that I carry, and she knows my views of gun ownership. We pretty much disagree on a lot of things, from tattoos to owning a AR-15 to even owning a Harley. She told me that now civilians are now allowed to carry handguns on the buses, I didn't even know we weren't allowed in the first place. SO, I asked, "what's so wrong about that?" She says that "it is going to make bus driving more unsafe because there is some idiot carrying a firearm." That's when I fired up a cigarette, took a sip of my coffee, and leaned forward. I told her "if good standing civilians weren't allowed to carry a firearm in the first place, what makes you think that its going to stop the bad guys from carrying a firearm." I then proceeded with, "Heck, I can certainly bet that you have already had a couple of bad guys carrying a firearm without you knowing and you just gave them a ride to their next crime!" I then finished with, "besides, if a person went through the process of being able to legally carry a firearm and is able to actually afford a firearm, chances are that he has a car and so he won't need the services of Houston's public transit system."

We left the argument at that and I got to enjoy the rest of my coffee.

It is better to have your gun and not need it, than to need it and not have it!

Several points of disagreement with your mom; guns not being the only one.

I'd suggest that at least in your dealings with mom, subordinate your views as a conscious way to fulfill The Commandment to Honor your parents.

I don't know with certainty the current state of things with regard to carrying on Houston buses. I thought Texas State law pretty much preempted the city from doing that. You'd have to dig further into the law to know if your mom is telling you "what is," as opposed to what some think "it is."

Now don't get me wrong. i love my mother no matter what we disagree. i have never tried to push my views on her and she respects that i will stand in the middle of a tornado to defend mine. nonetheless, i never raised my voice to her and shes never slapped me upside the head. of course that doesn't mean that she can't whoop my butt. believe me, at 5'4'' and 130lbs, she looks decieving. one time she picked me up and body slammed me when i was a 16 yr old punk thinking i could boss her around, i learned quickly that day. heck, my dad was laughing and said, "i told you to listen to your mother."

My mother's on the far side of reality when it comes to criminality and self-defense, as well. She absolutely considers any attempt to address the subject as pushing my views on her. Last time, it was termed a "lecture." Completely unwilling to accept that criminals don't abide by rosy views of the world, and that reality continues to function despite a desire to not think it does. Through it all, the truth remains.

I've never heard of the no guns on buses around here. It realy dosen't make sense. The bad guy is going to carry no matter what the policy is. I have a sister like that. She lives in a perfect world were nothing bad will ever happen. In other words she has a total lack of caution and someday this will turn on her and bite when she least expects it. You can not reason with some people and the best thing to do is to ignore the subject when they bring it up. You then go your way and do what you want to do. This way there is no hard feelings. Some people will find a way to argue about any subject you bring up .

My mother knows that the world is not like Disneyland. She has other means of defending herself (mace, sharp keys, pocket knives) she just doesn't like guns. To be honest, I think her distaste of guns is because when I was 12 or so (can't really remember) my dad had a Colt Gov't for home defense. Well, he somehow created a class III malfunction while unloading, without paying attention, he pulled the trigger as he was trying to clear it, and behold a bang went off. That startled my mom because my sister wasn't that far from him. So my mother told my dad to get rid of that gun (which I really, really liked).

Maybe it stems from that, maybe not. She is no sheep. She just speaks softly and carries a big stick.

I had to actually prove I was an idiot before they would let me take the CCW course.

Good job. You proved your point and still repected your Mom.

If perople could just for one week, nay one day, have x-ray vision they would likely lose their minds as they 'see' things they uncovered as they walk around in their otherwise everyday lives.
People wearing guns, knives, underwear of the opposite sex, porn mags in their briefcases...the results would be mind boggling for strangers and neighbors alike.

To my knowledge, there is no Texas law (past or present) that makes it illegal to carry on public transportation. However even if there was , there is no way I'd get on a bus in Houston or Dallas without a concealed gun and maybe that AR or AK !!!
You did good. Mothers can be incorrect, but never wrong.

Try to educate Mom without getting upset, you need to convert her rather than get her grumpy! Maybe you'll get a convert and she will start to carry. (But if she's like my buddies mom....... well :D)
