Sent this to the VT President...

    Dr. Steger…

My condolences to the entire VT family. These students should have never been in the position to be killed. Had House Bill 1572, proposed by Del. Todd Gilbert (R-Shenandoah County), passed, it would have allowed VT students who have concealed handgun permits to carry their defensive weapon on campus without repercussion by the University. It has become painfully clear that the ivory tower has come down. This should not have been a shock to you—it is well-known that campus security (any campus, for that matter, not just VT) is no safer than any other urban area and citizens should be allowed to defend themselves in accordance with the law.

“Virginia Tech spokesman Larry Hincker was happy to hear the bill was defeated. "I'm sure the university community is appreciative of the General Assembly's actions because this will help parents, students, faculty and visitors feel safe on our campus….In June, Tech's governing board approved a violence prevention policy reiterating its ban on students or employees carrying guns and prohibiting visitors from bringing them into campus facilities” (http://www.roanoke.com/news/roanoke/wb/wb/xp-50658)

Unfortunately, your rules and policies did not help the 31 students and faculty who were killed. Your spokesman is a fool to think students who are prevented from carrying defensive tools will suddenly feel safer on campus. Had one of your faculty, staff or one of your students been permitted to carry their legally concealed weapon, the carnage would have been a lot less. I reference the Law School shooting in 2002 where the suspect was stopped by a citizen who had a legally concealed firearm (but had to retrieve it from his vehicle, per school policy) and the Mississippi school shooting in 1997, where a principal retrieved his firearm from his vehicle to stop the shooter there (http://www.davekopel.com/2A/OthWr/principal&gun.htm) In both cases, the shooter was arrested, tried and convicted—as it should be.

I implore you to re-look your ineffective campus rules for legal gun ownership. They are arbitrary and do not create a safe environment. All your policies have shown is one person bent on a rampage will go to the one place where he knows he will be safe to commit his crimes—where he will engage defenseless victims—a “gun free zone”.

    Thank you.

    Very Respectively,

Voted, looked like the No's were cleaning house still. 32,000 and some change to 13,000 and some change. 2,000 or so undecided. That's a pretty good ratio.

I voted "no" like everyone else here. However, this tragedy does have a link to gun control. Last year a bill was introduced (and got nowhere) that would have allowed concealed carry on this campus. Had some responsible folks been allowed to arm themselves on campus, the killer might well have been stopped. Kim DuToit's web site has the details if you're interested.
