2007 Montana Legislature Final Report Card

The 2007 Montana State Legislature adjourned today sine die.
    Good riddance.

To quote a local radio personality:"No man's property is safe when the Legislature is in session".

Montana gun owners won one round and lost two.

Won: SB 309, Prohibit confiscation of firearms during period of declared emergency. Measure passed, Governor signed.

Lost: HB 340, Citizen self-defense and firearms rights (AKA Castle Doctrine or stand your ground). This bill would have also done away with concealed weapons permits (Alaska/Vermont style carry). Measure failed.

Lost: HB 420, Exempt Montana made firearms, accessores & ammunition from the federal commerce clause. Measure failed.

This was a split legislature. The House was controlled by the Republicans (and that was only because one seat was filled by a member of the Constitution Party, who usually sided with the GOP) and the Senate was controlled by the Democrats. Neither chamber could get along with the other. Imagine that.

But they didn't spend the last 90 days doing nothing. Montana is now the only state with an official lullaby.

When you’re wounded and left on Afghanistan’s plains,
And the women come out to cut up what remains,
Just roll to your rifle and blow out your brains,
And go to your God like a soldier.

One other good piece of legislation came out of MT. this session. They told the Fed. Gov. to stick their REAL ID act!

Oops, I forgot about that one. Thanks, Rick.

    So did NV. :)

Our session isn't over until about June 4, and there's still quite a few good bills being tossed around. Most of the bad ones have already died off despite us also having a Democrat controlled Assembly and a Republican controlled Senate.

That's what probably did the killing on this bill.

Glad they accomplished something. I was gettin' worried.

Official lullaby? The whole country's got one. It called Myopic Seltzer and goes something like this ...

Shhhhh, little lamb. Everything will be okay. Keep spending your hard-earned dollars on inconsequentials. Shhhhh. Everything will be okay. Don't worry about the tough stuff. The sky is not falling. Shhhhh. We're from the government and we're here to protect you. Trust us. Shhhhh. You have nothing to fear. Go to sleep little lamb. Shhhhhhhhhh ...
The thing about the Vermont-style method is this: the blood of innocents won't run in the streets. Won't by definition, 'cause it's the good guys arming themselves. Felons already go armed. A state's little laws disallowing felons anything don't do a damned thing, of course. A felon's gonna do what a felon's gonna do, known to the state or not.

Relaxing the restrictions would simply allow everyone else to also be armed, against those unknown felons. The result? A minefield filled with many, many more "land mines" (aka, upstanding citizens carrying). That can do one thing only: reduce the likelihood that a felon's going to get off scott free, when attacking innocents; and THAT will result in fewer attacks, almost by definition.

The state killed it? That shows the true colors of control, of those holding the public offices. Those folks are more interested in holding those precious little offices than in providing for the citizenry. Vote 'em out for cause and let them know why, in simple and straightforward terms.
Your best weapon is your brain. Don't leave home without it.
    Thoughts: Justifiable self defense (A.O.J.).
Explain: How does disarming victims reduce the number of victims?
Reason over Force: The Gun is Civilization (Marko Kloos).
