Finally done with the first half of Alaska CCW class
Today, I completed the first half of the Alaska CCW class. I learned alot about self defense, the legalities, and effective ways to manipulate both types of weapon systems in a stressful situation. Tomorrow me and my Dad go for the live fire qualifiction at the range. Some of it, I had already known from reading Alaska statutes, and reading the gun forums such as this one, but there were some new things that I learned too. Anyway, I'll update you guys on how I did at the range tomorrow afternoon.

Should be a breeze - hope you enjoy that and then you will be done.
Best of luck.

No, it is not required, but I decided to take it anyway to gain more insight on laws specific for Alaska, and some of the legalities, because every state is different. A CCW permit is NOT required to carry a concealed handgun in Alaska. I'm going to get mine anyway in case I decide to spend time in some of the lower 48 states that honor AK's permit. That is the only real benefit of getting an AK permit.
Edit: The class is required if an Alaska CCW permit applicant wants to obtain a permit.

Most of all, have fun with it. I think it's cool your taking the class even though not required.

I didn't know alaska even issued permits. Even if you never visit the rest of your country, the class will serve you well. Good choice taking it.

I just got home from the qualifiction portion of the AK CCW class, and I can say that it was some of the best training I had ever recieved. I feel more confident in being able to defend myself and/or my family members. The range session today consisted of basic handgun shooting skills, and then a 22 round drill session for the qualification exam, starting from the 3 yard line, working out to the 5,7,10, and 15 yard lines. I managed to get all my rounds into the 9 inch ring on the cardboard sillouette target, and two shots to the head. I now have my Alaska Concealed Handgun Course certificate, and in a couple weeks, I'll be sending it in to the State Trooper office to get my permit.
BTW: I love my Glock 19!
