If I had the link I'd point you to a thread which contains most of this - not so long ago.

Maybe the right search criteria would bring it up.

PA is approx 6.75% and is among the highest - some states are about 2% or so.

The nationwide average I am not sure but if all states that issue were averaged out then maybe (guessing) it levels at around 3% or a bit over. Just my 2c.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This PA graph is of course now out of date . I'd almost think we are even higher than 6.75% by now - possibly. (Growth industry LOL).
Like Chris i dont have a link handy but overall if i recall correctly its less than 2% of the population nationwide ( remember in some of our most populated states ccw is virtually impossible ) . As to the state with the highest percentage of CCW holders I honestly could not say but i would speculate that PA , VA , FL or UT would be right up there ( for the states that actualy require permits to concealed carry )
I'd read a report via the FBI last year that indicated that as reported by states the percentage of _licensed_ concealed carry persons was nearly 2% of the population. I'll try to find that report again and will come back to bump this thread.
Consider thought that very many people carry with regularity and are not licensed be they crime trade related persons as well as civilians who are not observing the law for what ever personal reason.
Say it aint so , No otherwise law abiding citizen would risk a felony ( in some states ) charge to defend themselves and thier family .
Below is a post I copied from Glock Talk. I can't attest to its accuracy, but it's what I found.
After crunching through the 2000 Census and 2003 Census estimates, the numbers in Chris Bird's Fourth Edition "The Concealed Handgun Manual", some official sources online which are a little more current, and filling in a few gaps from a 1998 CCRKBA report, the winners are:
Percent of Adults with a License to Carry in each Shall Issue State
7.45% South Dakota
6.79% Indiana
6.76% Pennsylvania
5.23% Connecticut
5.12% Washington
4.34% Idaho
4.10% Utah
3.86% Oregon
3.45% Tennessee
3.15% Alabama
2.72% Florida
2.71% Kentucky
2.67% Wyoming
2.41% Maine
2.18% Arkansas
2.11% Virginia
1.94% West Virginia
1.76% Arizona
1.75% Oklahoma
1.70% Montana
1.70% Michigan
1.62% Texas
1.39% South Carolina
1.34% North Dakota
1.00% North Carolina
0.86% Mississippi
0.62% Louisiana
0.58% Nevada
0.45% Minnesota
0.36% Missouri
0.33% Ohio
0.20% Colorado
0.17% New Mexico <-- Slight correction 12/22/04, per Ken Grubb
Honorable mentions go to Georgia and New Hampshire. These are "old wave" Shall Issue states--IOW, pre Florida. Because issuance is scattered among many local agencies, no one in either Georgia or New Hampshire is collecting statewide numbers on how many folks are packing. Seems reasonable to place 'em somewhere between the two statistical extremes among the other "old wave" states (South and North Dakota). However, if I were a bettin' man I'd put 'em near the top, and probably above Washington.
Total licensees among the Shall Issue states (excluding Georgia and New
Hampshire):
3,079,246
Total population living in True Right To Carry states (Alaska and Vermont):
1,267,925 (0.44 percent)
Janq , my post was a commentairy on the state of our country as a whole , yes it was sarcastic but only in the sense of supporting the members and lurkers who cannot freely post due to state restrictions . No one should ever admit a crime in a public online forum . No one should ever advocate violating a law . Both go on every day , not by me , and where possible i will use humor to both ridicule restrictions of the 2nd , and reassure folks that they IMHO have an absolute 2nd right .
To that end and understanding, agreed RR.
It's a damn shame, IMHO, that citizens across the country who are otherwise law abiding persons have to resort to defiance of community law in order to survive. Sadly exactly that is a reality for a great many Americans. :(
El Paso County, Colorado where I live is at about 1%. El Paso County has the most permits out of any county in CO.
And oh my gosh we are not shooting up the town like the local press would like. I don't think any El Paso CCW holder has been involved in any thing but justified shoots.
Whatever it is today, it's not nearly enough. Not by half. As a People, we need five or ten times the number physically carrying every day to begin to halt the lawlessness, criminality and brutality taking hold.
Haven't found good figures listed anywhere, except on that source noted above. Many states don't seem to publish the info.
Agreed. I'd like to see around 10% as a minimum nationwide but it doesn't seem realistic...yet. PA is inexpensive and easy to obtain. I think if more states were that way we might see a big increase in the numbers. Doubt that will happen, though, as PA gets criticized in some places for our lack of requirements.
As of two months ago. MN has 45K permit holders with 5M total people and only @4M that are old enough so a little over 1% in @3 years.
