    looking for a statistic

somewhere on here I read that 85% of American adults have never been arrested and that the average person convicted of murder has been arrested 7 times before they committed the murder.

Does any know where I read those statistics?

If it is not in the US Constitution then the Federal Government should not be doing it.

Don't know, but I'd guess the FBI would have these stats.

For such info I would look to the FBI and the DoJ starting here first; http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/welcome.html

I would do a google search for "Gun Facts 4.1" which is a compilation of a TON of stats like that... The PDF download is free, and it's about 100 pages of good stuff.

Ok, heres what I got from one of my criminology textbooks. About 14 million people arrested each year, which is about 4.5% of the population. About 7 million people in the system, including prisons, jails, probation and parole.

So if 4.5% of the popluation (I'm including juveniles in both the population and the numbers of arrested), are arrested in any given year, I would say it is entirely likely that 15% of the adult population has been arrested, because many of them would be repeat offenders with multiple arrests on their rap sheets.

I'll see if I can find something on the murders.

Thank You JANQ that link had some good stats.

As of December 31, 2001, there were an estimated 5.6 million adults who had ever served time in State or Federal prison, including 4.3 million former prisoners and 1.3 million adults in prison.

In 2001, an estimated 2.7% of adults in the U.S. had served time in prison, up from 1.8% in 1991 and 1.3% in 1974.

Of the 272,111 persons released from prisons in 15 States in 1994, an estimated 67.5% were rearrested for a felony or serious misdemeanor within 3 years

So those stats that I found at http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/crimoff.htm

    Helped out alot!

Timmy I have that site bookmarked and refernce it often.
That BoJS site along with the FBI's Uniform Crime Reports (http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/ucr.htm) are just a huge treasure trove of information.
Just for the heck of it if you are or become interested in crime stats by state or nationwide in easy to digest and understand graphs & charts then point yourself to www.StateMaster.com.
As well if you want the same type of information for countries the world over then go to www.NationMaster.com both of which specialize in handling statistics and reporting them in easy for the lay person to understand reports and graphic charts.

I'm glad you found the site to be of use.
