I have scaled down from a Sig 226 or Norinco 1911A1 to a 228 or a Colt Commander.
There are so many ways to put this, but they best way will get me into trouble, so I will put it this way I carry a 1911 govt most of the time.

They are left in full possession of them."

Well, I voted full size. My main choice of weapon rotates between Para-Ordnance P14, EAA Witness full size, steel frame, Wonder finish 10mm, or Taurus PT92AFS. All three, full size, double column magazine pistols.
My backup is a Kel-Tec P11.
Off-Duty I carry an N-Frame 4" Revolver backed up by a 2" J-Frame.
I selected "Full Size" since I figure the N-Frame 4"'er is a Full Size gun. I also back it up with a J-Frame 2"'er.
Usually my Kahr PM9, but lately it's been my new (Relatively) Taurus Mil Pro PT145. Sometimes I'll carry my Glock 36, but not since I bought the Taurus.

Integrated Close Combat
Glock 19 & 26, Kahr CM9 & P45, Para P12, Kel-Tec P-32, S&W 442, & Dan Wesson 14-2.
Well, the PT-99 I normally carry would be full-size, and I just traded my Bersa .380 for a Taurus 605, which I guess would be compact.
Compact is nice for some things, but even a bulky hi-cap can be easily concealed with the right holster.

Glock 19 / C-TAC
Skinny guy...have no problem concealing it well.
I carry either a Wilson Combat Professional 4" or a Springfield XD45 Service.....also a 4". I carry them both IWB and always carry two extra mags. I back both up with a Taurus PT-145 in my front pocket strongside.
The only thing needed for evil to exist is for good men to stand by and do nothing!!!
My EDC used to be a XD45 Service, now its XD45 Compact (conceals a tad better.)

I carry a Glock 19 in a paddle holster (same in avatar). I dress around the gun, and in my paddle holster it is concealed enough to wear a heavy-weight cotton t-shirt over and not print. I'm sure it will be even better when I get a VM2.
So far I haven't ran into a situation where I couldn't carry because of size. When I have to wear dress slacks with a tucked-in shirt, and it is too warm for a jacket, I wear a 5.11 shirt holster underneath and it conceals very nicely. Otherwise I can carry in an empty day-planner. 99.9% of the time I am able to carry in either a shoulder rig or paddle holster and stay concealed, though.
